3. So, I guess the Challengers get to read these before deciding they are no good.
Or do they read them?

7. According to Wikipedia...
"The book was banned from many libraries and ranks #88 on the American Library Association's "100 Most Frequently Banned Books" due to an exposed woman found in the beach scene. The woman was covered up for the 1997 special edition release. "

I'm betting they did it on purpose to get free publicity and sell a lot of books that nobody would ordinarily give a hooter about.

8. Putting them on a "banned books" list makes them much more attractive to
kids...

9. Does that mean they took them off the shelves, though?
If so, attractive or not, nobody's getting the chance to read some of the great works of this or any other time.

10. I'm not so sure...
Mr GoG and his buddies managed to find banned books when they were kids. Where there's a will...

I agree, taking books off the shelves is not cool. But I can't help wondering if the kids who were deprived of great literature won't consume it even more ravenously once they're out of the nest.

12. Not likely
Except, perhaps, in fundie-controlled school districts.

The ALA, and librarians in general, are fiercely protective of these books. In fact, most public libraries HIGHLIGHT them. ;)

13. Book bans aren't universal
they take them off the shelves in some places, small towns where there are lots of conservatives and religious nutjobs. The reasons for banning are various but all boil down to one thing: there is only ONE way to see the world.

In L.A. all of these books are on our school library shelves, and many of them are at work in our classrooms. The students don't seem to be too destroyed by dealing with the so called "objectionable material" in these books. The important thing is they get an explanation.

Anyway, if these people had any idea what goes on in the daily lives of kids they'd be off banning their parents, siblings, neighbors, and friends. You should hear some of the stuff they have to go through!

14. The Anarchist Cookbook! The Giver!
It's fucked up. Both your and the ones I added really should be required reading.
