C'mon give me your real deep thoughts on this news story that "gripped" our nation for endless months. Ice skating would never be the same.

1. Tonya had Nancy whacked on the knee.
What a boo-boo. She then lost the gold.

2. I remember the Seinfeld episode that lampooned the whole thing.
Right down to the crying scene at the end. Hilarious!

5. SNL
In an all-time record for unfunnyness, they had Kerrigan as a guest-host.

I swear after she opened her mouth I was wishing Harding had cracked her on the skull, instead (or as well).

6. Nancy who?
Edited on Tue Jan-06-04 10:46 PM by BiggJawn
Oh, the poor little rich girl who got her knee smacked at the championships and we all got "rivetted" by the image of her howling "WHYYYYYYYYYYYY????" in anguish? THAT Nancy?

Who later went on to do something that involved the requisite "Trip to Disneyland" where she was seen to mouth "This is so Corny" for the TV cameras, and Eisner was NOT pleased and she was never invited back? (she knew she could spend the rest of her life being "Snow White" in Dizzy on Ice)

And her attacker? Tonya? Didn't she go through several husbands and then on to a short-lived career as a soft-core star? I think her ambition was olympic Gold, but she would've settled for being a regular on Rikki Lake...

And WHERE are they TODAY?

Thank you very much.

16. It was at the beginning of
the current system which is to have one sleazy story dominate the news for a while, only to be replaced by another sleazy story. By sleazy I mean something that is of no true news value whatsoever.

17. wasnt that the year of Lorena Bobbit also?!?
I am sorry but I thought the whole thing was hysterical. For some reason I disliked Nancy Kerrigan much more than I did Tonya Harding!

Holy crap I can't believe it has been 10 years! :wow:

20. I remember Nancy's classless, bitchy demeanor when Ocsana Baiul<sp>
won the gold in the olympics. The camera kept flashing to her while the scores were being shown and she was pouting and spouting nastiness towards Ocsana<sp>.
It was sickening.
Then Tonya stopped her routine to whine and cry to the judges about her skate being untied and how its affecting her. Truly embarrassing for the USA.

22. Two airheads
They were the two top skaters in the nation (no one else was even close), and they both would have gone to the Olympics anyway. As former Olympians, they could have made good money as headliners in ice shows.

1994 was a TOUGH time to be a Portland resident. I had more American clients than I do now, and whenever I mentioned that I was in Portland, they would say, "Oh, Tonya Harding and Bob Packwood." :-(

26. And Tonya was the only female skater in competition at that time
who did the triple axel, though she was inconsistent.

Nancy went on to break up her manager's marriage and marry him herself, against her parents' wishes. Now she's a mother, but then, wasn't she always?

25. I still feel bad for Nancy--the focus on her was unbelievable--I'm sure
she's pretty much a prima donna, but as soon as she made a snide comment about Oksana, the media just turned on her. One day she was queen, the next she was the worst woman alive!

Besides, she was robbed!!!! She got that gold--it wasn't even close!

27. Skaters snub Tonya to this day. . .
but they all owe her a debt of gratitude (even Nancy!) The knee-whack heard round the world made figure skating into the big audience grabber it's become. With big paydays for all the big name skaters.
