The most transparent repetetive dream I've ever had.
Every time I close my eyes lately (today for a nap for example) I have the same dream. I arrive at a mall in a van with family and friends. I immediately go to my favorite shop which is filled with imported furniture and pottery and incense and imported food and everything I love. Suddenly I realize I A)have been left behind by my family and friends. I have no money and can't get myself home. Oh, it's always night time in the dream; and B)my legs are beginning to fail me - another common theme in my dreams. I leave my favorite store and start to walk through the rest of the mall. I see lovely shops which I can't get into because my legs keep giving way and I sink to the floor. People stare at me as I tremble and sweat, trying to stand up and move along casually, but then I fall again. Suddenly a big man of about forty appears and picks me up. He half carries, half supports me as we walk through the mall toward the parking lot. I feel safe, and then he tells me, "Wait here" and then leaves. He does not return and as I realize that he will not, I wake up.

It would be laughable if it weren't so pathetic.

1. It's not pathetic.

It sounds like the story of your life thus far...like you are playing it over and over and then awakening in the present time.

4. Learn From Your Dreams
pay attention to what they mean

the repetitive nature is rooted in the idea that there is a theme here that is your life.

Not pathetic, instead see it as a lesson, or lessons.

6. I have had similar dreams,
Edited on Sun Feb-11-07 09:24 PM by Mary Tyler Moore
... except my family or friends would side with the one person that terrifies me most, or sometimes tricking me to walk over broken glass or betraying me to those who were pursuing me. I had many dreams where my brothers and sister push me off a bridge or chase with a knife and my legs get that gooey feeling, like your dream.
Um, I guess they are not that much alike.

46. crim son, I have dreams where my legs fail me too.
It used to feel horribly frustrating and made me feel incredibly vulnerable. At a certain point, though, I began flying in the dreams. Instead of stumbling or losing my legs, I would float at first, then take long leaps, then finally fly. I still have dreams when I want to run and can't, and I still stumble in my dreams, but whenever it's really critical, I always remember I can fly and it happens.

That only deals with one little part of your dream, but it's a thought for perspective. I don't think negative things in dreams are always negative, and I don't think everything is necessarily symbolic. I used to fret about how difficult it was to run when I dreamed, but I think I've learned that I just needed to accept that what I thought was the right way to move in dreams only worked in real life.

47. InternalDialogue, that's such a neat thing to hear!
My personal life mirrors the dream, right down to the lack of money and abandonment by a big man. But the flying... I wonder if I can have some control over that? Since I have the dream almost every night I will try to remember what you said. You really can fly? "...what I thought was the right way to move in dreams only worked in real life." I love this.

49. Years and years ago, I read a book on how to dream lucidly.
It was sort of a "do this set of exercises and keep a dream journal for three months" kind of deal, and it was supposed to lead you to be lucid in any dream you wanted to at any time. I never really followed through on the whole thing, but I was able to work through two recurring dream situations that always scared me. One was not being able to run -- I think my frustration with that and the slim knowledge of lucid dreaming was what got me to flying.

The other was getting shot -- it didn't happen really often, but I used to wake with a start when someone would shoot me in my dreams. Now, it's almost like I cringe before getting shot, but I know somehow that I'm bulletproof.

I wish I remembered more about how the whole lucid dreaming process worked, but if you're up for exploring a little about yourself and have the time, it might prove interesting. I'll check around Amazon for the book I remember reading (I gave it to a friend a long time ago), and I'll PM you if I find it.

52. Thanks. I'll also look around for information.
One of my recurring dreams is of getting shot in the back and sinking to the bottom of a slow-moving stream/canal, right before a stone-arch bridge. I never feel any pain... rather a sense of peace as I find myself staring at the pebbles on the bottom of the canal.

15. Listen to SPK
He's right. There is a lesson to be acted upon in your dream. Hence the recurring nature of it ... you haven't acted yet.

The themes are the experiences of abandonment and powerlessness, the implication being your power derives from your associations with others. The implicit flip side of that is that the power you need to use is already yours ... but you have to marshal it and use it.

Amateur dream analysis is alway suspect ... but hey, I used to pay big bucks to a Ph.D./M.D. for this kind of thing and I'm not sure she wouldn't have said the same thing. :)

Edited on Mon Feb-12-07 12:31 AM by BlueStorm
where you are feeling as if you are not in control and you feel vulnerable and abandoned. Are you having some stress at work?

Perhaps you should take a closer look as to what is happening around you. It's like one of my friends said, "Everything that is in your dream is you and about you."

I'd elaborate more but my intuitive side just doesn't want to kick in tonight. x(

So do you feel, at this point that you are being betrayed? I am really drawn towards the paralysis that you are experiencing in your dream and the fact that you can't seem to go forward is indicative that something is upsetting you sense of self-control and that you have the sense that there is alot of chaos going on in your life and you are unsure of how your future will unfold after this particular event is over.

71. It's more transparent stuff. The STBE and I want to separate
for a year before the divorce, to satisfy all contingencies. We decided this last spring, but we can't sell our house and therefore cannot afford to move forward with the separation. It's a ridiculous situation. I sleep in the back wing and he sleeps in the master bedroom. Meanwhile he's going to counseling and I'm going to school, on & off, because I have no job skills and will need to work (obviously, if I'm on my own). We are trying to be strong and mature but the obstacles are very demoralizing.

Anyhow, thank you for your input. I do think it's all about my lack of control over anything right now.

66. It's middle age, dearheart
Happens to all of us...we all start falling down...and our hormones..well..that's just part of the story, and sometimes another story all by itself!

Meanwhile...just know..you are not alone no matter what you're dealing with in your waking life

69. Whoa_Nelly, we didn't exchange words last night!
And I was up until two a.m. :(

Maybe tonight?

Middle age is a cruel joke.

68. I've had the "not being able to walk" dream my entire life
I hate that dream. Strangely, I'll struggle to walk forward but if I turn around and walk backward it becomes easier.

Weird.

70. After all the discussion, I remember having no dreams last night.
I have two thoughts now; one, that I should try flying when it happens & two, I should try walking backwards. When you walk backwards, do you feel like you're doing something bad?

74. I feel like people are going to look at me and think I'm weird and defective
Which is probably true.

75. Maybe, if they look really closely.
Being weird and defective is a problem only if you don't embrace it.
