Our metal roof has those little half-moon thingies that keep the snow from sliding. They seem to work.

We have two rows of snow guards right along the edge of the roof above the gutters. We generally don't get enough snow here to worry about weight, but we DO get enough snow to be unpleasant if it hits you on the head. The snow guards prevent the avalanche problem quite nicely.

luckily my porch peak runs the opposite way so it's unlikely to get hit on the head thank heaven
