Who is the oldest person you remember when you were growing up?
Her name was Mrs. Golden. She was 96 and a neighbor of my grandparents, who were in their 70's. You could see her veins and arteries on her hands. We HAD to kiss her. She chewed tobacco and spit into a can. She lived in Arkansas, in a house with no heat or refrigeration. It was not unusual to see a roast covered with a kitchen towel sitting out on a table.

She lived to be 104.

1. Mr. L across the street
He was really old, though that may have been because I was just a kid. He had only one arm, the other was lost in a coal mine accident. He drove this great big 50's car, a Hudson or something, and had a "necker's knob" on the wheel to make it easier.
