Have you ever eaten Feijoas?
Edited on Thu Feb-15-07 02:55 PM by StClone
Not the Brazilian national dish Feijoada (a stew of beans with beef and pork), but the delectable fruit Feijoa native to southern South America.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feijoa

When nearly ripe to ripe, it has an addictive sweet lime/straw/pineapple flavor that I liken to Lime flavor Fruit Stripe Gum. It is now being grown in quantity in New Zealand and as a start-up in California. It's also is an attractive landscape plant.

It may be found in stores now into May. Give it a try and see what you think. I love it!

1. Yep. They are often marketed as pineapple guavas.
Tasty as a kiwi, IMO. I'm thinking about planting some in my yard.

2. Gee I should of mentioned that!
An acquaintance from California mostly remembers tossing them at other kids and now longs for them to eat.

3. I've been on a fruit tear the last few months, I'm always looking
for new ideas--thatnks for the tip.

FYI I really liked the Minneolas I bought this week. I polished 'em off, but will buy more; they're like a jazzed up orange for about half the price.

5. May be a little pricey
I found them on-sale for about $1.29 each last year and am waiting for them to be down in price when available this year.

Has a slightly grainy texture when not totally ripe. Still awesome!
