You were so right!!

A house built in 1914 has drains that can't accomodate modern washing machines, you said. I was told by the owner "oh, no problem -- the washer hose drains into the set tub and that will hold the overflow."

Nope. As you said, the 1 1/2 inch drain can't take the quick spillout. And the set tub doesn't hold the overflow. I either have to run smaller loads or stand in the basement and monitor the situation so water isn't running over.

Damn.
