My friend is going down to key west for a week. He needs to know of some good reasonalbly priced motels and eateries.

Any help would be appreciated.

1. He is going at the most expensive time of the year...

Being a straight man, he will be a endangered species there. My suggestion is to have him stay at a chain Hotel, other than that, Key West is a Great Place to visit.

on edit: am confused if he is straight or gay, that would make a difference in my answer.

4. Straight, but worldly. I don't think he'd be too upset over
much of anything. he's been everywhere from Africa to Laos and Vietnam. If he hasn't seen it, it doesn't exist.

3. We spent our honeymoon there the week of Fantasy Fest.
Yes, straight married couple honeymoons at Fantasy Fest. We had such a wonderful time we went back for our 5 year anniversary.

Prices were so high at Key West, our travel agent booked us at Parmer's, about 35 miles up the highway.

My sister-in-law told me to check out the Green Parrot near the zero mile marker. She said it was a Bikers Bar. It sure was. We drove by and saw all these bicycles parked out front. We ate next door at the Meteor.

Key West is not like any other place I have ever been. It has a whole different mind set. I look forward to going there again and again.

Check out the Truman White House. They have the Palm Beach voting cards on display.

5. Okay here is a list from memory
My wife and I went there the first week of November and we had a blast. I lost the bookmarked thread but here goes.

Eating
We hung out a lot in the harbor at the North end of the downtown area
Alonzo's
Conch Republic
Turtle Kraals
are all there reasonable, good food, and my wife especially fell in love with the Mohito's at Alonzo's. By the end of the week we basically had our own table (outside on the corner). Appetizers are half priced there from 4-6 or somthing like that. They had a fantastic sauce for their raw oysters and homemage potato chips.

Crabby Bill's is okay food but very reasonable. Dozen oysters for $5.

Pepe's is the oldest eating place there and though you may think it looks like hell on the outside it is good home cooking at affordable prices.

Avoid the Boar's Head and Margarittaville as they are tourist traps.

I would personally warn against eating conch. Chewy and tasteless no matter how it is made.

There is a bar (name?) one black south of Duval (the Green Parrot?) that is REAL local flavor (No Bitching!) but I wouldn't eat there.

Michael's is a pricey steak place that flies steaks in from Chicago everyday. If your friend wants to splurge one night I would recommend that or Latitudes (but that is REALLY splurging) make reservations through the Hilton (boat ride out).

Basically I would recommend staying around the harbor. All the restaurants there are good and you can bar hop.

our cruise ship stopped there for part of the day and we got to see a bit of the town and I loved it. AM planning to go back for a longer stay and see more. there was a bar there that had some elvis imprsonator on stage at the time, that seemed interesting
