I'm having difficulty paying any attention to the bird.

I can't imagine what would happen if it were another dog (or cat, if I already had a cat.) I know you are supposed to introduce a new pet slowly, but my dog's jeaslousy is unreal. I would not have believed it if I had not seen it.

Whew!!

1. Now now, you are assigning a human emotion to a dog
have you NOT watched Ceasar Milan on Dog Whisperer? :)

We let our small Myers parrot settle this matter within our household. A bite and a wing flapping bluff fight won him the King Of All He Sees crown. :)

2. I have a poodle.
He's jealous if I go into another room -- even if he can see me.
He's my first poodle - I've always had large, sporty-type dogs before. He's bossy, demanding, whiney at times, and totally spoiled.
But I'm crazy about him.

3. "Jealous" how? I mean, what is the poodle doing
that's being jealous?

4. If I talk to the bird, the poodle comes running and jumps up and down and wants me to pick her up.
Edited on Tue Feb-20-07 08:50 PM by patricia92243
She has gotten - all of a sudden - where she sits right on top of me and watches every move I make - in case I pay any attention to the bird - and this is after only two days.

6. Poor baby.
I would follow what idgie said and get the bird another bird.

10. Talking to the bird
Do you use the same voice or expressions?

Animals will pick up on your talking to "them" as talking to "him/her"

12. Can you talk to the bird and talk to the poodle at the same time,
or in succession? Tell the bird about her 'sister' the poodle and that she's jealous, etc. and tell the dog about her new sibling. Let the dog know that the keet is here to stay and you still love her (the dog) a lot and always will. Give them both attention, as best you can.

16. Very, very good advise. I talk baby-talk to both of them. The parakeet will probably learn to talk
easier if I speak in a regular voice - plus maybe the poodle won't die of jealousy!!!

7. It's not jealousy, it's HUNGER! The poodle sees you eat a chicken for dinner and just
figures you've bought a poodle-sized poultry dinner, that's all.

11. My pit bull was the savior of my German Shepherd

without him, I think the Shepherd would be a handful. He sure was as a puppy, until he got his buddy that is. Now, with two pups, it is true doggie harmony.

But I fear he is a fashion victim.

21. Fashion victim long enough for a picture
and then they just throw the hats off. They are wonderful animals though. Best I've ever had, and I've had dogs my whole life.

Capone and Ozzy say thanks!

13. I don't know.
We just recently brought in 2 more adult rescues (Bouviers) to join our 9 year old Bouv and 10 year old pug mix plus 2 17 year old cats. We haven't even had any problems with the new dogs not knowing what cats are.

All I can say is that I'm sorry you're having a problem.

15. christ on a crutch
i expect birds to be jealous, as it is their nature, but a poodle is in theory a dog and should have a little more team spirit than to be jealous of a freakin parakeet

17. Could be pack rank issues
Dogs see physical affection as a sign of status within their home "pack". Perhaps your poodle is just seeking reassurance that his/her place and "rank" within your pack isn't being threatened by the new bird. Often, pack status issues do not involve violent or aggressive behavior, so long as the canine involved did not consider himself to be the "Alpha", so it's easy to miss and mistake it.

Good luck either way! Poodle are so intelligent--someday I'd like to have a standard poodle. I'm a big-dog person. :D

18. Have a bunch
Edited on Wed Feb-21-07 08:31 AM by dropkickpa
but I haven't really had any issues other than the fact that my lab will eat both the guinea pig's food and the fish food if she can get it. The fish ignore everyone, and the pigs scuffle occasionally and tease the dog, dog goes nuts, then sees what she thinks is a piece of food and gets distracted ("food? nope, fuzz. I'll eat it anyway. Food? nope, it's a lego, YUM, I ate it!").

In general, I do not ever use baby talk (didn't use it with the kid either). When we first got the dog, I was having some issues with her and jealousy/pack rank jostling. I am the undisputed alpha, but there was confusion (for the dog) for a short while there as to whether Lila or Dropkid ranked higher, to the point where Lila would growl and sorta snap at Dropkid. Well, I put an end to that right quick by not allowing to dog to muscle in when me and Dropkid would hug, cuddle, hell, even talk. Lila was to lay down and wait until me and Dropkid finished. Lila picked up on this surprisingly fast, and seems to be happier now that she has a definite idea of where she stands in the pack.

19. This made me laugh:
"food? nope, fuzz. I'll eat it anyway. Food? nope, it's a lego, YUM, I ate it!"

You just described a scene from the life of my Golden Retriever. Toby gives his Official Hyperactive Puppy Seal of Approval.
