Name an actor or actress that everyone seems to like but you.
Here's mine:

Julia Roberts is great at playing herself in every movie she appears in. She's the Walmart of top-paid movie actresses.

And I do not think she is attractive.

You? :P

1. I once saw her smile during an interview
The corners of her gaping mouth met at the back of her neck, and the top of her head fell off.

That was when she was doing press for the film version of Mr. Ed, wherein she played the title role sans makeup.

7. Ed Norton
I think he's less an actor than a tabula rasa: not handsome nor ugly nor striking, undistinctive in voice and manner, such a standard-issue white man than people project the qualities of whatever role he's playing onto him, so even the feeblest effort on his part can be widely viewed as a great performance (Then again, for the sake of argument, maybe his craft is so deceptively pure and subtle as to be utterly unobtrusive, and I'm just not on his wavelength).

Bingo. Actually part of the talent is that he's so blank that he can do anything, any role or emotion...and can change between them in striking ways. I think this was part of his success in Fight Club (I don't know that too many actors could do the "...oh, shit. I'm Tyler. Oh f^ck, I'm crazy" thing believably.) and why he was the only bright spot in Primal Fear, an otherwise terrible movie. Seriously, if you want to get it...watch Primal Fear. The last 20 minutes or so in contrast to the beginning of the film sold me that he was going to be successful. Also, that Richard Gere cannot act.

It just always seemed that her career was nothing but a relentless campaign of self promotion and manufactured hype. Who was her adoring public?
I imagine that in her more lucid moments, Courtney Love, must have asked herself, "I get crucified for this, but she gets a pass???!!!"

I have never known a diabetic (and I've known literally hundreds and am one myself) that is that dramatic, hence the danger of them, they often go unrecognized.

I don't think I've ever seen a convincing asthma attack on screen, either, for that matter. Again, this is something that often goes unrecognized until it's too late, and isn't usually accompanied by screen histrionics that would put Rod Steiger to shame.

...I can't stand Scarlett Johansson. Everyone's constantly raving about how she's the most deliciously sexy and beautiful saucepot to come down the pike since Aphrodite, yet to me she looks a blond chipmunk. Just tonight, one of the "news" channels was going on about how Playboy has named her "most incredible sexpot in the Universe" or something, and the newsmodel was bloviating about her "elusive allure." For me, it's very fucking elusive. Elusive to the point of absence.

Oh, and I think she's a fairly crap actress. Looking stupid and vulnerable only goes so far.

She's on my list of actors who, if they are in a movie, I will probably never watch it. I find her to be a pretty bad actress who's just riding along on her looks (which I don't understand, but apparently someone important decided she's "hot.") It's a shame, because there's actually a lot of great, talented actors out there who don't get much attention because the press is to busy fawning over the likes of Scarlet, Angelina, etc. Blaaaaah.

26. Five of mine
-Adam Sandler: OK I liked him in 50 First Dates but I think he's exceedingly overrated as an actor
-Ben Stiller and Will Ferell: Both hugely overrated
-Rob Schneider -See above
-Barbara Streisand: I love her politics and I love her passion for her politics and thank her for all the great things she's done for the progressive cause but I've never cared much for either her acting or her singing

I liked Julia Roberts in her earlier movies but nothing that she's been in over the past ten years has appealed to me or has been that good overall IMO. She got a huge black mark next to her name from me when she failed to thank Erin Brockovich in her Oscar acceptance speech after winning for her role in Erin Brockovich. I know that it must be an overwhelming feeling to win an Oscar and you can forget things in the spur of the moment and I know she had lots of other people to thank as well. But you would have thought that she could have at least remembered to thank the woman whose actions inspired the movie for which she was winning a Best Actress award for the first time in her career.

I punched the head cheerleader at my high school. Shows what I think of them.

(BTW-I was a cheerleader for a bit. The punching and sneaking cigs got me kicked off the squad.)

Never liked her. Thought she ruined Sense and Sensibility.

She strikes me as phony even though she doesn't want to be seen as such. Yaps on and on about not wanting to be judged about her weight, yet every picture I see of her she's dolled up looking skinny. Hates having to do nude scenes, but continues to do them.

Apparently when she was 15 her parents let her shack up with a guy twice her age. (not her fault, but her parents allowed it)

I think she is years older than she alleges.

60. Brad Pitt.
Nothing there except the face; on the screen he's pretty much a blank space. Makes you long for the days of male actors who had at least one functioning testicle and a bit of "everyman" appeal. I'm thinking Bogart, John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, and more contemporary guys like DeNiro and Duvall. I do like Clooney, he seems much more alive onscreen than mooks like Pitt and DiCaprio, who is also detestable.

"I'm thinking Bogart, John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, and more contemporary guys like DeNiro and Duvall."

I like to say that some of today's pretty actors and actresses don't look as though they're on solid food yet (Maybe they aren't, which would explain the weight thingie).

What's interesting to consider is that Ronald Colman and Claude Rains, who would probably be written off by some of today's audiences as too effete, survived actual warfare (as in World War I). Today's made-up pretty boys look pretty weak by comparison.

Because that is exactly the same thing I say about her all the time. She plays herself. So does Meg Ryan. Yes, they are cute in a Herbie the Love Bug kind of way. But that isn't acting. No, she just has a lot of teeth. And when she smiles your mind is subconsciously counting all those big white teeth, just like Farrah Fawcett.
