Pissed about M&M ad in theatres using "This is the Day" by The The as a soundtrack. |
|
I LOVE The The. I'm glad that Matt is making some money from old work, but not in this context. And don't they get the meaning of the song? It sinks the ad if you do.
Then again, I once heard some early SPK layered into a Coke ad (one with a car on a turntable, rotating POV). Just odd.
End vent. You can't have your 30 seconds back, sorry, but you can choose to use your next 30 for something beautiful.

1. That M&M commercial made me feel old. |
|
*sigh*
On the other hand, I was listening to Sam Seder's show and noticed he used a piece of "Uncertain Smile" as a coming-out-of-commercial segueway. Very cool.
On a side note, what also made me feel old is seeing "Gone Daddy Gone" on a list my son keeps of songs he wants to put on his iPod when he finally gets one (he's saving up). He meant the new remake, though, not the Femmes' version.

2. Used in context, is fine. |
|
SPK were one of the ultimate sonic theorists of cultural annihilation and thus, the forced awakening of the individual. And there is a sample of "Berufsverbot" in a Coke ad...
"Shop as usual...an no panic buying." -Negativland.
The Femmes rule. I wouldn't imagine that anyone could add much to their music by covering it, in the same manner that you can't add much to The Residents or Killing Joke by covering them... If your child can discover the Femmes originals, it might be a good thing.

4. Whoa! Another The The fan |
|
I know the commercial and had the same feeling when I heard it. Dusk remains my all-time favorite album. Ever.

5. "Soul Mining" is mine. Have you heard his first, "Burning Blue Soul"? |
|
It has been released as "Matt Johnson" as well as "The The". Some really nice moments, more moody than melodic.

7. I don't have that.. err I don't think |
|
But it seems that some of those tracks ended up on that 2 disk anthology they put out a couple years ago. I only got to see them once in concert. They opened for DM in 93.. I think that's right?

6. Unfortunately a lot of good bands are doing this. But it pays the bills I'm sure. |
|
I'm particularly pissed about Of Montreal in the Outback commercial.
