I've never followed (or liked) Britney Spears, but she seems like she went from being your typical empty-headed, bubblegum celebrity into a really troubled young woman in an absurdly short amount of time.

I think my life is messed up sometimes, but then I look at Britney and see that it could be a lot worse.

50. I heard an interesting theory on her behavior earlier.

Basically, Spears is in total control of herself for the first time in her life, and she has no experience in running her life like a normal person.

As a kid, she had very little interaction with her peers. She was a child star, totally controlled by her mother, and all of her relationships were "professional". She had no real responsibilities, and never faced a consequence for any action in her life. When she finally DID get out from under her mothers thumb (or the thumbs of the managers hired by her mother), she immediately married Federline. K-Fed, according to most reports, is a very charming, but highly controlling person. Since Spears was used to basically doing what she was told, she fit right in and HE ran her life during the marriage.

Now she's divorced. She has no real friends, her mother isn't telling her what to do anymore, her husband isn't telling her what to do anymore, and she fired the managers who tried to impart some sort of control onto her actions. While this may be a good thing in the long run, at the moment it's not. She has no experience building appropriate relationships, no sense of responsiblility, and no comprehension of consequences.

In many ways, Spears is like a 12 year old girl who has been raised in a repressive and closeted household, who has suddenly been set totally free, with the money and celebrity to do anything she wants without question. Since she never went through that normal "learning about consequences and responsiblity" phase like we did as teens, she has no idea (and actively denies) that any of her actions are going to have any real impact on her.

It's sad really. I used to joke about Spears, but it's really just not funny anymore. She's going to kill herself, and nobody around her seems to care enough to do anything about it.
