Delaware Man Runs From Police - Trips Over His Baggy Pants - Arrested

A Wilmington man was arrested and charged with weapons offenses after New Castle County police said he tried to run but tripped over his baggy jeans.

Chad Mercer; 20, of the first block of S. Gray Street, was found to be in possession of a loaded handgun, agency spokesman Cpl. Trinidad Navarro said.

“Officer Dale Lagace observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on Mercer Drive near Marrows Road,” Navarro said. “The officer stopped the car for the traffic violation at which time the passenger fled from the car. Lagace chased the subject, but his efforts to run were hampered as his jeans fell down below his knees.”

After Lagace caught the suspect, Navarro said, the suspect became combative until a second officer, accompanied by a K-9 unit, arrived to assist.

“After a brief struggle, the suspect was taken into custody and found to be in possession of a loaded .357 magnum revolver, Navarro said.

The operator of the vehicle, Navarro said, also fled and crashed into several cars on Monterey Drive.
