http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KhatI used it in Saudi Arabia in 1990. At that time, it wasn't even illegal in the U.S. Beats the hell out of coffee.

...the Somoli Technicals would get jacked on this stuff and take pot shots at the UN coalition troops at the Airport in Mogadishu. Never tried it personally.

but the Pakis I was working with brought me a cup of tea once. A warm feeling started at my toes and flowed over my body. I just felt alert but without any of the coffee jitters.
I asked them what it was, but they had no English word for it. One of them simply said drugs. I learned later what it was.
