Did Kate Bosworth ruin "Superman Returns" for anyone else? |
|
I thought Superman Returns was almost as accomplished an adaptation as Nolan's utterly transcendental Batman Begins, but Bosworth really sunders the experience.
How disappointing that Singer not only recruited a girl who was barely out of her teens to assay the role of a 30-35 year old woman, (that WAS Margot Kidder's character, five years later) but that said choice radiated all the spirit of a sloth.
When you search for one who would serve as the adoration of a demigod, choose wisely.

She seemed somewhat tough enough to be Lois, but not quite, and just looked way too young. Then again, the whole oh-no-Lex-Luthor-is-being-a-jerk-again plot is starting to wear thin with me.

Which is exactly how the average twenty-year old would play a career woman. She had none of Kidder's vulnerability.
And if you're familiar at all with the other villains in the mythos, you know that island-in-space will come back to haunt the world in a BIG way. A pretty good set-up, that.

Interesting that Singer opted to leave out a $10 million sequence wherein Superman explores the ravages of Krypton.
How much do you want to bet Brainiac hitched a ride on the rock Superman used to travel back to Earth, detached at some point, wound up on that island, and discovered a dandy use for those crystals?

the Return to Krypton scene was pulled because Singer and his two writer buds filmed it, with Zod in mind...Jude Law was suppose to take upon the role of Gen. Zod, but he didn't take the offer...but, thats just imo.
I never thought of the next villian hitching a ride via Kal's craft, thats a good angle on the issue. I think, that one of the crystals on New Krypton will either form Brainiac(I hope), or the Eradicator. Whatever being is created though, will use some of the crystals to turn NK into a craft of sorts, and sow chaos, and grief....:D
I was really upset that the return to krypton scene wasn't in the 14 disc dvd set, I was really HOPING that scene would be included...but another rumor, is that they will use that sequence in superman returns II....:D

38. who's the bald naked dude in the crystal cave? |
|
Is that even from SUPERMAN RETURNS? I had read on ain't it cool (take it for what its worth) that Bryan Singer cut the Krypton scenes because he was waiting to do either a special edition/director's cut dvd like Peter jAckson did for the Lord of the Rings and/or he was planning on re releasing it theatrically as a special edition. As of last summer he planned on putting the Krypton scenes in the dvd. I have scene several scenes that were cut from the final version of the film, but those naked images have me confused. At first I thought it was Lex. If someone can clear that up for me I would appreciate it. Thanks!

SUPERMAN RETURNS and I like Bryan Singer. I didn't think Kate was bad but I think they could have cast someone a little older. I had heard early rumors that Evangeline Lily (Kate from Lost) was considered and I think that would have worked out very well. Hopefully the chemistry between Lois and Clark/Superman in the sequel will be stronger. They seemed to distant. I can see her being pissed at Superman for leaving without saying goodbye but she acted weird around Clark. Not enough time between Clark. That and her new boyfriend seemed to take up the time she would have spent with him. I think the sequel will be stronger and can't wait for it to come out.
On another subject, is Brandon Routh suffering from the Superman curse? He hasn't done anything since and has nothing lined up. The gay rumors have been so strong that he has annouced his engagement to his long time girlfriend, but no date has been set (perhaps weeks before the sequel comes out)I had heard internet rumors that Bryan Singer intended to get a gay actor to play the part and have him come out to coincide with the release. Bryan Singer, an openly gay man wanted to show the world a gay man could play a mainstream action hero. Kind of hard to believe a studio like Warner Bros would allow that. I would have LOVED to have seen that and I think the time is right for something like that to happen. Does anyone think the movie would have suffered at the box office if he did come out? Still, I think Brandon is gay and that its very sad that "if" he is he can not come out becasue of his Superman image. Discuss...

9. yeah, the internet buzz |
|
wanted Evagenline Lily for Lois, but K. Spacey recommended Bosworth, and Singer took that vote of confidence, and cast Bosworth. Another change they made was Hugh Laurie was set up for Perry White, and he lost interest, and they cast Frank Langella.
I don't think Routh is suffering from the superman curse at all...a sequel has been greenlighted, and expects to come out in summer of 09. I don't think Brandon is gay, but the internet buzz seemed to push that often.
I think Bosworth was misscast, but I can deal with it...I believe why Lois was so upset over Superman leaving, was that she was ...
Spoiler
Pregnant with his son...and thats why she wrote the "Why the world doesn't need Superman." If you notice, during the roof scene, she says "why did you leave "us". After a couple viewings of this particular scene, I believe she was referencing Jason, and herself...not the world, and herself. She knew it wasn't Richards son, as did Richard....hence, Richard questioning in another scene the "you spent a night with superman, aka did you love him" in the house scene.

|
Don't get me wrong, Basinger turned out to be an effective actress in several 90's films, but I can't believe her vanilla character would ever have caught the interests of creatures as remarkable as the Batman and the Joker.
In fact, the ONLY actresses to impress me in a superhero film were Margot Kidder and Michelle Pfeiffer.

7. I felt that the role was poorly written, but she didn't add much to it, either |
|
Honestly, the whole love story angle took up far too much screen time, and it lacked the compelling interest that the Kidder/Reeve incarnation managed to convey. Roush, to his credit, did a better job of showing the scars left by their involvement, but that might be credited as much the writing as the acting.

Sure, it would have been less maddening without the loud sounds and constant reverb of others' screams, but one is still left with the reality that one was, quite in fact, in a dungeon being tortured.
Worst movie I've seen since Ultra Violet. Almost as unwatchable as Star Trek Nemesis.

20. Singer has made some settle hints on what he wants for the sequel |
|
Zod and Brainiac have bothe been rumored to be the villians with Lex Luther in a supporting role kind of like in Superman II.I thought Gene Hackman could have pulled off Playing Lex Luther again but I understand why they wanted a 'fresh' cast.I heard the same thing about Jude Law. I joke with people that I think he is Terrence Stamp's long lost son. Ironic that Terrence Stamp is the voice of Jor-el on Smallville.
By the way, I do not believe the rumors that Brandon Routh's next two films before the Superman sequel is a remake of "Deathtrap" and "Somewhere in Time!!!" )LOL)

43. X-Men and X2 were about a hundred times futher away from the comic book than any Superman film |
|
Singer succeeded in making good standalone scifi/action films but they seemed to really go way beyond anything necessary to ignore the comic books and characters at every level.
The main draw of comic books are there serial nature and rich mythic quality. The Singer prided himself on making the X-Men movies "one at a time" for some retarded reason.
They should have waited a few years until Joss Whedon could have done the whole thing.
He wouldn't have given us tall, dark and handsome/leading man/puppy dog Wolverine - featuring the rest of the X-men as sidekicks as the outline for every movie.

did a lot of subtle nods to comics, and other people associated with the superman franchise, both in film, and tv serials. But, I do hope he reads more superman comics, instead of putting all his stock into Richard Donner's creation...Donner did good, don't get me wrong, but he isn't the end all, say all of superman.

and the movie kinda sucked. I know it was a big disappointment for the studio which spent a lot of money producing it and marketing it. I like Singer's first two X-Men films though, so I don't have a problem with him.
Then again, I personally never cared for Superman as a character anyways. He always struck me as an incredibly bland superhero. I always preferred Spiderman, X-Men, and for DC comics I thought Batman was cool.
Kevin Spacey is one of my favorite actors and think he did okay with what he had, but his plotline was so stupid...

they do the sequel Kate will be older and a little more experienced. I'm just hoping they stick closer to Clark/Superman/Lois and stear away from the James Marsden character. He's likeable in the role, but maybe they'll have to kill him off so we can focus on Clark and Lois.Just a thought. By the way, the kid will be like 15 in 2009. I have no idea where they are gonna go with that.
