Do you ever forget that you are anonymous on DU?

I do. I'll be typing merrily (straight from my brain to my keyboard!), and suddenly remember that nobody knows that it is me who is writing this. I also forget that opinions expressed on the internet sound very different when you say them face-to-face with another person. Take the Marcotte/McEwan controversy, for example. When i read what Amanda wrote, my thought was "you are brilliant and incisive." But then I thought about how people would react if I or anyone were to say it to them in person, and I could see how people might be shocked by it. It didn't sound particularly shocking when it was read online, though (you know what I mean).

Being a newcomer around here and I read a lot more than I post. So sometimes I start to post something and then remember "hey, this poster doesn't know *me* from a hole in the wall" and just let it go.

I always post the way I talk.......people know where I live......

My career, my children, my husband, and all that........

It just depends on how you conduct yourself here, and I have always been pretty open....

I think you all are in a room together and are reading my messages while sitting around shooting the bull. I constantly have to remind myself that everyone else is like me, sitting in a chair behind a computer screen typing.

I'm sure Agent Mike knows who every last one of us is, if you know what I mean. Plus, if you look at my posts and do a little research, I'm sure a good PI could figure out my identity looking at everything I've written here over the years. I just write by assuming everybody knows my name and address. That's caused me to delete a few posts over the years, and to not say some things I'd like to say, but that's how it is.

I figure, if I'm being too paranoid, and nobody knows who I am, then it's no loss. If I'm right and somebody confronts me about it, I can say "see, you were watching me!"

A handful of people know who I am, and I'm not sufficiently secretive that somebody couldn't figure it out if they wanted to.

I just don't post anything here I wouldn't say in person. Which isn't to say that I'm timid on DU, more that I have shiny brass ovaries in real life too.
