Are there any old school fans out there?
I'm talk "independant worm saloon" and back....(even though the new stuff ain't too bad)
Anyone see one of their lives shows back in the day?
Ah, the good times that band reminds me off...
I had some of the best of times in my life listening to their music, going to their shows, and doing terrible covers of their songs with my friends. :D
Ahh, the memories.

it's better to regret something you have done than something you haven't
And if you see your mom, tell her I said
SATAN! SATAN! SATAN!

... the show at Bayfront Park, Miami, 1993.
I have never been the same.
One of the few performances that actually changed my life in a lasting way.
Another performance that truly changed my life, and I was never the same after also was Rabbit in the Moon live at Zen festival 1997, Zepherhills, Fla. (I've seen them about 6 times)

considering that I usually listen to BHS when I've had a few Gunni I would expect to ahve the lyrics a bit off. Besides, I think mine are better anyway. :)

8. I was too young to see them in their heyday, but.... |
|
Edited on Fri Jan-09-04 12:27 AM by RandomKoolzip
They were one of the first "punk" bands I ever bought an album by...(The first was The Dead Milkmen...What can I say? I was a Zappa/comedy music freak as a kid, and was always on the lookout for "funny" music...)
Everything they did before "piuoghd" was absolutely fucking amazing..I've got a few bootlegs that are still as twisted and bad- tripperific as any music ever recorded. IMHO, they've been considered a comedy band by too many people, when in fact they're all incredible musicians...check out Paul Leary's guitar solo on "22 going on 23." What he's doing is consciously beyond keys and timbre, and into some psychedelic realm unbeknownst to most acidheads.
I'll always cherish the Buttholes for helping me discover the world of "alternative" music, before it was called that, back in spring of 89....after buying the Buttholes, my next purchases were Black Flag, DK's, Eugene Chadbourne, Minutemen, Residents, Negativland, Sonic Youth, Wire, etc. They were my "gateway drug," so to speak.

10. There's just something about... |
|
Edited on Fri Jan-09-04 12:32 AM by Heyo
.. the way they warp the sound into music that still rocks.. but using Gibby's (friggen' AWESOME) vocal effects.. and Paul's guitar style... they go off into the psychedelic realm that is hard to define here with words...
And the way they combine all that with what I could only describe and a utter and complete visual blitzkrieg of lights, lasers. crazy videos playing upside down and backwards....the whole package is really amazing....
Hell, the band is sillouetted in a tunnel of lights most of the show...
Man those guys rocked.

12. Read the chapter about them in "Our Band Could Be Your Life..." |
|
by Michael Azzerrad. They were life-changing to a lot of people.
Of course, acid plays a HUGE part in their aesthetic. Acid and feces.
And Gibby's pure, effectsless voice is A WONDER. "Too Parter"- good example of his natural voice, and it's a very expressive instument...
God, I wish I could have seen them back in 84-85....

22. it was called "Entering Texas," and it was insane |
|
I had it on a video called "Impact Video Magazine," with a segement on Public Enemy and other groups too.
I used to invite all myfriends over in high school to watch that while they were tripping/getting high. They didn't know whether to cry or laugh.
I especially like the part where Gibby jerks off into a frying pan, and his semen magically forms the word "SATAN."

Peace... I hate the word As I hate hell All Montagues
I had a dream last night... 'Cause it looked just like a dream I had a dream last night... But it looked unlike a dream
Mercy, mercy I'm made of heart Make me a suit so I can get it off Heaven help me, my head's spinnin' round Stop this airplane cuz I got to get down!
I had a dream last night... And it fit me like a glove I had a dream last night... And it fit me like a glove Right on... Haha
Here's to the Montagues John Wayne and Betty Davis And Romeo...he waved before A chorus girl in Vegas Yeah!!
Juliet is up in heaven A pocket full of pills And Jesus drives to Mexico To get her prescription filled!
I had a dream last night... And it fit me like a glove It was a scream last night It was gettin' kinda fun Yeah, rock out, whatever!
I had a dream last night... Because she looked just like a dream I had a dream last night... Because she looked just like a dream
She was on fire last night... And I was breathing gasoline I had a dream last night... And it fit me like a glove I had a scream last night... Lord above!!
I didn't know where to shake my butt Walked backwards, fucked like a fox I was more fucked up than your sister's tackle box 3AM to 5 O'clock
And one of us leaves And I got shot Shot me down Yeah, whatever... rock out!
That's it, that's my rhyme Take it to the street... beeeeatchh!

24. Was never a great fan, but.... |
|
When I saw them, back in the day, I remember being surprised at how enjoyable they were. Not exactly musical virtuosos, but interesting.
Later on, I loved the "Pepper" video: "They were all in love with dyin', they were doin' it in Texas."
Thanks for the reminder--I'm listening to their web radio right now. May pick up a CD or 2 for my collection--a good remedy for excessive old-hippie mellowness. (Hey, I like Folk Rock!)
