If you don't know Gladys Knight and the Pips, you're missing out on some great American music.

Edited on Fri Jan-09-04 09:11 AM by mac56
Much better than Marvin Gaye's version IMO.

She's a beautiful woman, too.

Check out their music. You won't regret it.

20. Historical note for the young folks.
After Elvis got drafted & Buddy Holly died, American rock & roll radio went through a bad time. I can't remember the rock critic who referred to "the heinous Frankie/Bobbies of Philadelphia)" but lots of it was really dreadful.

Motown artists provided some of the bright spots--Gladys Knight & the Pips, Marvin Gaye, Smoky Robinson, The Four Tops, etc. From down south, Stax/Volt rocked with Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave--and Otis Redding.

Eventually, some British kids brought it back home.

Local history note for extra credit--this record was produced here in Houston:

I'd pay to see it!

She kicks some serious ass--even her love songs hit me "right there."

And yes, I do mean there . . .

18. I grew up on Motown Went to the Motown museum
I love Motown. I think I know the words to most all the motown hits. I met a girl once who's sister made it big in Motown. Mary Peaches Jackson. I met her in Columbus Georgia. The only thing we had in common was Motown. She was black as night and I was whiter than white. She invited me back to her Grandma's after church one Sunday. Her older sister could write songs and moved to Detroit where she sold some of her songs to Barry Gordie.

I am sure I have black blood in my past. My father was a poor Southern boy living in an orphanage because he had so many half brothers and sisters that they couldn't be taken care of.

19. Gladys Knight is a classy lady.
That probably explains why she was never a "Super Star". To be successful in the entertainment biz requires an absence of ethics and moral fiber.

"You're the Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me" is one of my all-time favorites of any artist.
