You've got 15 minutes to evacuate your home - What are you going to take??
Edited on Fri Jan-09-04 09:31 AM by LynneSin
Imagine you hear a warning that you have 15 minutes to evacuate your home. After those 15 minutes, anything left in the home will be destroyed forever - leaving you only with the posessions you've grabbed. PLUS - if at anytime you LEAVE your home before those 15 minutes, you cannot go back in and grab more stuff.

What are you going to take????

ME:

  • My Wicker Suitcase on my dresser. I keep all my makeup organized in it but I'm not taking it because I'm vain about my makeup. I also have my passport and a spare set of car keys in it and I always toss my wallet in there each night. I could toss in some clean underclothes from my dresser and a few pictures near by, close it up and I'm good to go.
  • My Computer Bag. My laptop is already in there and the location of the bag is nearby so I could grab my father's HS picture, a few of my favorite books, my stuffed animal Lobo, and toss a few clothes over the bag to take with me
  • My Cat - I'd scoop him up and toss him into his cage - which also contains all his toys, collars and leash. I'd also grab his catfood container and toss it in the cage - it's big enough to hold him and the cat.
  • Jug of water - I highly doubt water will be readily available. Since I'm in the kitchen grabbing the cat food I'll take an unopened jug of water with me. I'd also throw a can opener in one of the bags on me since it seems can openers are never available when you need them.
  • My CD Jukebox - Since 60% of my CDs are already in there including most of my Led Zeppelin, I'll just unhook the machine and take it with me. Since I've already got my car keys, I can just play the CD's in my car.
  • If I have time and room - my pillows and comforter. My pillow I've had forever and my comforter so I can stay warm. But if the warning bell is going off - I'm out the door.
  • Second set of car keys - Hey, I'm heading out the door and I hang my keys nearby. I'd rather grab them just incase I lose the first set.

I can't think of anything else that important. First place I would go to is the closest ATM machine and withdraw as much money as possible if I am able to get money out of it.

2. My grandmother's quilt, made from scrap
fabrics from the fifties, sixties, etc. I can still see my mom, sisters, and grandmother wearing dresses made from those fabrics.

Pictures and albums. Financial records, if possible.

Of course, the kids will already be out.

3. After I make sure that ...
my son and daughter and both cats are safely out, I'd grab my backup hard drive and my jewelry case.

The hard drive because it has ALL my work on it and the jewel case because it has things passed down to me from well-loved people.

Anything else? Nope. It could all be replaced.

7. Not done because I'm planning on evacuating......
I rarely use my laptop, so it's always in the computer bag. I keep it in a closet that has clothes and is next to the bookshelf where I keep my favorite stuff animal.

As for the suitcase on my dresser, I really bought it for keeping my makeup organized. It's not really a suitcase for packing things but a decorative suitcase to store things in, but in a pinch it'll do. I just like keeping my important stuff handy and they happen to be in there. I bought it to keep my makeup in it.

And my cat has more toys, leases, collers etc so I keep the extras in his cat cage.

I live in my apartment - us apartment dwellers have to keep things compact or our lives are clutter.

10. My Dog, My Glasses, A Change Of Underwear, My "Car Wash" Soundtrack LP
That's pretty much it. I suppose my passport would be helpful, but it's likely that I've already got my driver's license and credit cards in my wallet which is in my back pocket.

14. Yes and yes.
I sleep with my wallet in my back pocket... but I'm not WEARING my jeans while I sleep. I just slip off my jeans and leave the wallet in the pocket then gently place the pants on the seat of my dressing-chair.

The car wash soundtrack is just a gag.

15. Lessee...
...my wife's copious amounts of photos (we have something like 25 albums over 20 years of marriage and our respective childhoods), the dog, my CD collection (I throw away jewel boxes and keep them all in a Yellowjackets collector I bought years ago), the firebox with all our insurance, wills, etc, my Robin the Boy Wonder watch, and my son's Thomas the Tank Engine toys. This is assuming that taking him and my wife is a given.

20. All the irreplaceable books I can cram into a bag or box...
...my cat and his stuff, a few clothes, the envelope containing all my financial information (!), as many CDs as I could grab, and the hard drives out of my computer. (And maybe the keyboard, too.) If I had a car to pack, I could probably take almost everything I own, minus the furniture, in 15 minutes...

22. "The Football"
It's not exactly like the "football" that accompanies the chimp, but we do have a canvas bag that contains documents that are important to us. We organized it the last time we moved, and it remains.

We call it "The Football".

It's really the only thing we have that couldn't be replaced in a pinch.

Then I'd grab the camping gear from out of the garage.

So camping gear and the football.

Oh, and a few firearms. Guess those would come in handy. ;-)

Why would
