Appreciation thread for China.
Sure, their human rights record blows, but hey, these days, whose doesn't? Plus they've been very very good about not calling in all that Treasury paper they hold, thereby blowing our economy to atoms. And speaking of blowing things to atoms, they haven't nuked anybody lately, either. So let's all start out the Year of the Pig (really) with a big Huzzah! for the people who keep Wal-Mart stocked with, well, pretty much everything.

:sarcasm:

3. Not to mention their humane treatment of animals.
Human Rights, Animals Rights,
Pish-Posh, we're a booming global economy.

Disclaimer:

I am referring to the Chinese government as opposed to the
people of China. As is the case in many countries, the government
and the people are not one and the same.

8. True, our government is far from spotless

in the areas of treatment of POWs, honoring the Geneva Conventions
( they ignore them) and government transparency.

But DU would not exist in China, not on the open internet.
How many words were banned from their online dictionary?
I know 'democracy' was one of them.

The Chinese people are not fleeing, risking their lives and spending all their
money to come here, if this country is as bad as the one they left.

We definitely have our faults, our government especially.
But to infer that we are on the same level as China in the areas
of human rights is wrong.

We can speak out and we do so everyday here.
They cannot, without risking their lives.

5. Here is an unsarcastic appreciation post
China is one of the very few modern civilizations that is continuous from antiquity. The Chinese were the first to make wine, the compass, gunpowder, a writing system, and paper. The people of China may be ruled by an administrative nightmare of a government, but China herself? She is a beautiful flower.

6. Thank you--excellent post.
I'm moving there within the year, and cannot wait to explore the country (and the continent), and get to know the people.
