Smoking in the laundry room is NOT cool...
So, Wednesday night is laundry night. So, we take our laundry down to the 5th floor of our building to put our laundry in. What happens? There is this couple in there having a chimney fest. My husband is deathly allergic to cigarette smoke. Also, why would anyone who is doing their laundry want their clothes to stink like smoke? This pisses me off. I walk down to the fourth floor to the leasing office and alert the people in there. One of the leasing agents goes directly up there to tell them. So, tomorrow I have to go talk to the Building manager to ask her to post no smoking signs and to take the ash trays out of the room. Apparently before the current people bought the place, they let everyone smoke in the communal areas, and apparently people didn't get the memo that it's not OK to smoke in there anymore. UGH.
Thanks for letting me vent.

3. Get over it
Smoking brings pleasure to folks. If you're so concerned about pristine air then move out to the country. Wash your clothes in a stream and hang them up to dry. Really.

Screw their pleasure. I don't want to get sick because you think you need to bring yourself pleasure in public.

And you have to admit that cars produce far more toxins than cigarettes

10. THere's not a car in my laundry room.
Edited on Wed Mar-07-07 07:09 PM by YellowRubberDuckie
If there were, this post would have been COMPLETELY different. And the whole car bullshit is getting old. When there's a car in the building, I'll call you.

9. I'm not kidding
I don't know the layout of the laundry room in question or whether or not there are viable options. My point is that everyone does something that's noxious to someone else and that smokers shouldn't be singled out for abuse.

11. The smoker was singled out in this instance because of the illegality of it.
Your point makes no sense in this case.

13. Your OP says there were ashtrays in the laundry room
I don't want to turn this into a flame-fest but that's why people who smoke thought it was ok to smoke there.

You sound tense. Maybe a cigarette would help you relax:evilgrin:

12. If it's not legal to smoke in particular places, that's not abuse.
That's the law. It's also illegal (at least here in Washington) to drive with an open container of alcohol in your car, or to drive with .08 or more of alcohol in your system. Is that abuse?

There are times and/or places for certain things, and smoking and drinking are two of those things.

24. The question is who decides the times and places for things
Personally I feel that driving is inappropriate unless you're traveling more than ten miles or carrying more than 10 percent of your body weight in cargo.

Should I get to impose this personal feeling on everyone else? That's a serious question and I would appreciate an answer.

Just for the record I do feel that open container laws are abusive if the driver is completely sober. I think that driving after any impairment should be illegal which is one of many reasons that I prefer walking or riding a bike.

Just because we come to town,
Why do they kick my dog around?

I know.

21. Fine, but there are appropriate and inappropriate areas to smoke.
Laundry rooms are not appropriate areas for smoking, just like it\'s not appropriate to spray perfume all over another persons laundry....or hell - to rub dirt on their laundry. You wash your clothes to get RID of smells and dirt, right?

23. I think, as a group, smokers feel picked on.
His reponse probably comes from that frustration. Not anything you wrote, necessarily. Just an overriding feeling of being a pariah because of their smoking habit. I went back and read your OP, and while you do sound pissed off, it does not seem like you have a bias against all smokers.

27. Because it brings them pleasure they should be able to do it...
whenever and wherever they like? Masturbation brings a lot of people pleasure, but I don't want them doing it on my laundry.

Smoking also brings a lot of people asthma, too.

4. Gad, what a couple of idiots!
Glad your building manager is going to take action! Even if a person were not allergic to smoke, who wants their "clean" clothes to smell of eau de smoke right out of the dryer?

15. Stinks up everyone else's clothes.
Not considerate, even if it wasn't a health threat.

Most smokers are totally oblivious to how much it STINKS. Therefore, they are not concerned with
spreading the stench around. Ugh.

17. But what if the cool kids are doing it?
Then it's cool, right?

I kid, I kid.

As a smoker, I have to say that, while I found it puzzling that they allowed it in the first place because, as you mentioned the smell in relation to my clean clothes was kind of an odd juxtaposition, I did enjoy it when the laundromat still let people smoke there. I got to pretend it was the '70s, which I enjoyed a great deal. Especially when it was super hot and humid in the summer. But, now they don't, and of course that makes sense, so it's not a big deal to me. I like smoking, but I also like being as considerate as possible about it. I hope the people in your building get the hint when the signs go up.

18. OK, I never smoke in closed spaces.
Especially if others are present.
I understand your feelings.

But 'we' have become the socially acceptable 'n' word of today's society.
Did I say 'socially acceptable'?
Nay, MANDATED.
:-(

If you don't want people to smoke, outlaw tobacco.
As long as it's legal, make accommodations.
That's all.

19. SMoke outside. That's fine...
But not around doors, that's all I ask. I'm not only thinking about the way it smells, but my husband can go into serious breathing problems if he's around it. It doesn't take much to set him off. And to be fair, it also happens if he's around a campfire for too long.

25. I agree with you to a point, though I don't smoke
But there are things that are perfectly legal to do that you cannot do in certain places. You can't drink alcohol on the street or in your car or in any place for the most part except for a bar or your home, for example.

Hell, I'd like to have a beer in the laundromat but I can't do it. Just because your particular thing is legal doesn't mean everyone else has to make accommodations - the truth is we all have to.

But there's always one person who is going to be a complete ass about the thing and go about their own business as usual.

I don't know, I would think cig butts could be a hazard around, I don't know, laundry detergent and BLEACH...... but that's just me. ;)
