Tame possums are really quite gentle creatures. Perhaps there is a local petting zoo or someplace to take the little critter that knows how to handle a tame wild animal. They are really not good pets for families with small children.

26. I rescued an injured possum once upon a time |
|
He never bit me or harmed me in any way, but I do know how to handle critters. Since he appeared to have been struck by a car, and there was a small amount of blood coming out of the corners of his mouth, I found a vet who would humanely put him down. They're weird critters - they have to have gas and a cardiac injection to put them down.
He was pretty cute, but stinky.

28. Opposums visits my house... |
|
on a regular basis -- they come in through the cat door and roam around, sometimes into my bedroom. I'll wake up in the middle of the night and take a sniff -- yup, oppussum's visiting! :D
I really like the little guys, even if they are stinky. And I've never had a problem with one in all the years -- they have always left my cats, bunnies, and pigeon alone, and done nothing more than have a little nosh.

29. And you like pigies too |
|
I have a pet pigeon here at work. I sneak a little birdseed to him. I've been threatened many times for feeding those "rats". I've seen the guy from the CDC who checks on their health - they're in great health. One guy told me they carry disease and I said, "Wow. That's really funny from a guy who walks through Parkland every day."
I like skunks too - the smell doesn't really bother me. I wouldn't want in in my house, but there you are.
I've rescued snakes off roads and freaked people out.
Your place sounds like a fun place! :D

Used to keep the back doors open for the cats and the dogs, and about once a week one would wander into the living room. The littel ones are awfully cute.
