From an e-mail I got -- I took out the actual links, which were cleverly implemented despite obviously being links to no-nos... just use the icon in your taskbar; do not click on ANY links being advertised - it'd cost Microsoft too much money to make an e-mail like this anyway...

Upgrade to Windows XP SP 2
Dear Windows XP User:

You may be running an older version of Microsoft® Windows® XP. Microsoft is no longer releasing security and other updates for older versions of Windows XP. However, Service Pack 2 for Windows XP is available as a free update to help you protect your PC against viruses, hackers, and worms.

We strongly recommend that you install Service Pack 2 for Windows XP as soon as possible to help keep your computer more secure and up to date.

line

Update to Windows XP Service Pack 2 using the Microsoft Update Web site:

a. Click Start >> Windows update, or go to the Microsoft Update Web site and select the “Express” option.

b. Microsoft Update will scan your computer. If it lists Windows XP Service Pack 2 as an available update, then your computer is ready for Service Pack 2.

c. In the Welcome to Windows XP Service Pack 2 Setup Wizard, click Next.

Note: While updating your system, Windows checks your system to be sure it complies with the Service Pack 2 requirements. Then it archives the service pack files in case you want to remove Service Pack 2 later. Finally, it installs the service pack. This can take a few minutes, so please wait.

3. No prob - just remember, the REAL update address is
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Anything else is a scam, begging to plop malware on peoples' Windows-based systems (or emulated Windows sessions within Linux, Mac, or other platforms.)
