I watched my first NetFlix streaming movie
As previously posted here, you can't watch streaming movies unless you have Win XP, or higher. Personally, I think Linux IS higher, but they don't see it that way.

Anyway, I had left my computer set up to boot to XP if I should ever need to, so last night I watched a streaming movie.

To get movies to play, NetFlix installs a viewing program on your PC. Then when you click the play link for a movie it starts to play almost instantly, and I had no problem with buffering.

They let you watch one hour of movies for every dollar of service you buy. We have the basic service, so we can watch 18 hours, in addition to the DVDs we get by mail.

I watched "Dark Days", a documentary about homeless people in the subways of NYC.

This adds nearly 50% more movies by my estimation. And it costs nothing.

Keep in mind that you don't have the DVD menu, for extra features, language options, etc. Just the movie itself.

It's the dawn of a new era, folks!

1. How did it stream?
I've considered watching one of those, but I hate it when streaming vid pauses to buffer and catch up and so forth.

I really don't think I could watch a movie that way.

But what was your experience like? Was it smooth?

2. No buffering!
Of course, it all depends on your connection speed, but we have the basic cable connection, not the higher priced faster service, and it worked great.

The video quality was quite good, but I suspect it's not nearly as high as a DVD, because it will be viewed on smaller screens, so there's no need.

Dark Days was a black and white movie, but I assume the color would be good too.

I've got over 16 hours of viewing remaining for the month, so I'll get a lot of use out of this.

3. Thanks for the information
I wish TCM would do something like this. They have so many obscure old films in their vault that they never show on television, or if so at very odd hours. These films will probably never be released on DVD either. They could make a little money on them and still make their cable viewers happy by showing "Casablanca" or "The Wizard of Oz" every month...

5. wouldn't that be fabulous?
I enjoy their shorts and oddities so much, and also always wish I could watch at night instead of day because of the nighttime offerings.

7. Well I no longer have cable because I didn't really watch it
I can usually catch the stuff I DO watch, like the The Daily Show, online. I would totally support something like this if TCM decided to do it. :hi:

8. Interesting...I was thinking of getting rid of cable and
using netflix. I just checked their website about it but can't find any information.

I will have to investigate further.

9. Here ya go...

* Log into Netflix.
* Click on "Your Account"
* Look for a small graphic on the right column that says "How can I watch movies on my PC?"
* Click the "Start Now" link, and voila, you have a new tab next to Queue.
