What (serious) flamewars sadistically amuse you? |
|
Edited on Sat Mar-17-07 04:40 PM by WritingIsMyReligion
I always used to lurk at the North/South bang-em-ups in GD. Regional bashing! How 1850's! Saw a lot of Preston's with their canes flapping around.
The Olive Garden flamewar was classic as well. I missed the beginning but came in right in time to see the thing explode into epic proportions as multiple threads ravaged the Lounge, decrying all Loungers of any taste (good, bad, weird, elitist, vulgar, anything) at all.
Then there was the enormous, multi-forum explosion over the ethics (or lack thereof, depending on who you asked) at "that other progressive website" that got several old-timers banned, including the starter of said website. I was horrified, and yet it was like a car crash. You wanted to see who got burned next, who started the next angry thread, etc. That one was awful.
On Edit: I forgot my own Cialis flamewar. That one was fascinating, if disturbing. Who knew people could be so defensive of boner pills?

1. I didn't like the "other forum" one. |
|
A friend of mine got banned over it.
In my opinion, the person who started that "other forum" was an asshole. Again, my opinion.

I figure that all flamewars can be so ridiculous that it's good to laugh about them. If you can't laugh about a flamewar, you have far too much invested in it to be healthy.

when Skinner posted in the Lounge about the rule of not referring to it. It was seriously amusing to read some of the "who, me?" comments in there by people who were clearly regulars over there. :-)

They make me laugh and cry at the same time. Most flamefests at least have 2 (or more) sides to them. This one (in my opinion alone, of course) really only has one reasonable one.
I'll probably get flamed for saying that.
Of course, I'm the "humane eggs flamewar" guy, so...

There are always at least two sides to every issue.
Usually three or four. Just because we hold an opinion doesn't mean it is the only valid one.

One advocating revenge, and one working for punishment.
The Death Penalty is revenge, based in human emotion. Nothing more, nothing less. Flame away.

I used to start some of those North/South ones in GD. I started one this year in the lounge on MLK day, wonder if there's any correlation there? I inedvertedly started one on Hippy bashing in the lounge one day, but it was epic.

My Cialis one--I seriously did NOT know there were people so invested in the drug. I merely complained about the idiocy of the ads, and their lack of any taste or subtlety.

I jumped on a lady who was accusing a couple of "abusing" her children because she had them in a restaurant at 9pm on the weekend before christmas. And this was not the only flame-war in this thread - this lady really called in the rain of fire.
It was brutal, back and forth for like 2 days until the thread was finally locked. Even the OP came in on several strings and said
"MY GOD - THIS IS THE LOUNGE - CAN'T YOU PEOPLE JUST LET IT GO!"
The answer - of course - was no. The only way to stop an unruly flame war once it is started is to get the thread locked. Afterward I realized that I got caught up in the flame war myself and PM'd the OP to apologize for getting out of hand, which elicited an apology from her as well.
We can't all say that our flame-wars have ended that way, I was very pleased.

12. I try to stay away from flamewars, personally. |
|
I guess I am amused, and also saddened sometimes, by how attached people can get to their opinions. It's almost as if they identify so fully with them that any sort of disagreement is seen as a personal attack, which is just plain silly sometimes. That said, people can also be quite nasty and disrespectful of other points of view. It's frustrating and yet very metaphoric for what happens on the global level, as well. I bear witness, but try not to get sucked into the drama of it all.
That's my two cents.

59. This exchange on "Douchebag" was one of the highlights of DU evah! : |
|
Jakefrep: If every house in America had a bidet.... ...there would be no need for douchebags.
LynneSin: Yes but what if there are more people than bidets in a home... What if I live in a home with 4 people but there is only 1 bidet to share amongst us. What would I do if I felt I needed a bit of freshening but someone was on the bidet already. At that time, perhaps, a douchebag could fill in a pinch - you never know!
Jakefrep: If someone spends THAT much time on a bidet... ...they've got bigger problems than just an "unfresh" feeling.
LynneSin: Why do you hate unfresh people - they have rights too you know... You probably segregate them at gathering - if you smell dirty go stand over there in that other corner away from us fresh people.
You are an unfreshaphobe
Jakefrep: The "unfresh" people caused 9/11... besides, who wants to hang out with stank-ass peeps?
LynneSin: Well this wouldn't be a problem if we had douchebags for EVERYONE or at least multiple bidets in every house Why do you hate baby Jesus?
. . .
"unfreshaphobe" -- classic!!

My wife calls me the worlds only militant male breastfeeding proponent. I love reading all the stupid arguments against it, and I even like participating whenever the subject comes up.
My favorite thing to do is to tell the anti-breastfeeding women in the discussions that they only oppose breastfeeding because men have oppressed them into thinking that their boobs are not there for what God intended them.
I just love it. It makes me giggle. And what's best is that this is something I will argue endlessly because I am right: breasts were put there to feed babies.
aside: what is with the Olive Garden flame wars? this seems to be something that spans boards across the internet. I've never read or participated in them and I have a hard time believing that boil-in-bag itallian food could ruffle the ires of everyone. So, WTF?

|
...usually ends in a flame war. The funny thing is that you can never work out where the flames are going to come from. It could be a thin person claiming that we are discriminating against thin people, a fat person claiming we discriminate against fat people, bogus science being used to claim that being 10 stone overweight is OK, dodgy surgical procedures to lose weight the unnatural way...I could go on here.
