What do you carry
with you, either in your hand, in a pocket, or in a bag, that you absolutely cannot survive without?

Me?

My coffee goes wherever I do.

19. Maybe I can pass along the secret of how to make a magical shrunken head
from the severed head of your greatest enemy.
It's a lengthy and involved process that mostly consists of liquidating all of your assets and donating all of your money to the Church of Scientology, care of Elrond Hubbard. As a free bargain, I'll also 'clear' your body of all Thetans, giving you the same amazing psychic powers that I have.
It's a pretty sweet deal, all it costs is everything you own and becoming my slave for all eternity. :D

61. pocket folding knife
More specifically, this one:

It's a Buck knife. And looking at the MSRP, I just realized I got it for $30 off! :woohoo:

However, when I bought it I found out that the Buck knife company are Christian fundies. Apparently they view Jesus/God as their "Senior Partner". I think I'll be buying Benchmade from now on. Made in USA and Jesus-free.

If you are a new Buck knife owner, "welcome aboard." You are now part of a very large family. Although we're talking about a few million people, we still like to think of each one of our users as a member of the Buck Knives Family and take a personal interest in the product that was bought. With normal use, you should never have to buy another.

Now that you are family, you might like to know a little more about our organization. The fantastic growth of Buck Knives was no accident. From the beginning, management determined to make God the Senior Partner. In a crisis, the problem was turned over to Him, and He hasn't failed to help us with the answer. Each product must reflect the integrity of management, including our Senior Partner. If sometimes we fail on our end, because we are human, we find it imperative to do our utmost to make it right. Of course, to us, besides being Senior Partner, He is our Heavenly Father also; and it's a great blessing to us to have this security in these troubled times. If any of you are troubled or perplexed and looking for answers, may we invite you to look to Him, for God loves you.

"For God so loved the world that he gave His only begotten son; that whoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John: 3:16

Then I get the exasperated eye-roll.

OH! Except for once...

"Sarah, that's my sweater; I'd appreciate it if you'd take it off or at least Ask before you wear it."

We have the castle law in Mississippi. You can carry your gun in your car without permit.

I can't take it on campus with me when I work, not even in my car, but every where else I go, it's with me--in my vehicle.

There just isn't a lot of room inside. And for some reason, my wallet is bulging - odd, considering I always have no money in it! :silly:

If I still lived in the last state I lived in, I would have to add Glock 19 to the list. That's a big part of why I left that state. I don't want to live in a concealed carry state.

85. Before concealed carry law, people wore guns on their belts
It was weird- but legal. Once the concealed carry law passed, my wife and I knew that if we stayed we would have to carry fairly regularly- strange but true. Up to that point, we only had to carry (in a legal way, such as on our own property or certain outdoor activities) in some situations for our own safety (and we are not in no way "gun nuts"). So, we left.

You're absolutely right. Bonehead has one of those voices that you can hear if you're upstairs in a closet and he's out back by the fence, whispering.

My youngest brother is the same way.

And...have you ever noticed -- the people with voices that carry the farthest are frequently people who love. to. talk.

At least that's the case with Bonehead and my brother.

84. Kleenex; wallet; keys; usually a knife -
though I sometimes leave the knife behind if I think I'll be going somewhere it won't be allowed. Last year I was called to jury duty on short notice and had my knife in my pocket. I tried to carry it into the courthouse, but was told - not to my surprise - that knives were not allowed in the building. I had taken the train, so I had no car to which to return the knife. I went outside and ditched it in the bushes. Jury duty lasted exactly 15 minutes, after which I went back outside and, to my delight and relief, found the knife in the bushes.

whisper: it's a reference to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Towel_Day

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy has a few things to say on the subject of towels. A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value—you can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapours; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a mini raft down the slow heavy river Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or to avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (a mindboggingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you—daft as a brush, but very, very ravenous); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.
More importantly, a towel has immense psychological value. For some reason, if a strag discovers that a hitchhiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, face flannel, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet weather gear, space suit etc., etc. Furthermore, the strag will then happily lend the hitchhiker any of these or a dozen other items that the hitchhiker might accidentally have 'lost'. What the strag will think is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with.

– Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Chapter 3

That is exactly the way I am. I know I have a travel mug kind in the faculty room at the school I teach at. I realized just moments after I pulled away that it was left behind. I felt a terrible sense of incompleteness, until I filled up another mug at home.

My down side -- I spill. I have this lovely Starbucks travel mug that is porcelain (I like pottery and porcelain way more than plastic) well the damn lid pops off when the coffee is hot and if I turn a corner too quick it goes flying. Do you spill?

In the classroom, I'm forever moving about the room (art - very active class) and I'll put my mug down somewhere and lose track of it. I recruit the students to keep an eye out for it.

I think for me it's as much psychological as it is just liking coffee.

My appointment was early -- 8:15. It killed me to go in there without my coffee, but I just knew that a dental exam is no place to be sipping coffee. When I got out of the chair I raced to the nearest Duncan Donuts. It was like a fix. The down side was the styrofoam -- I don't like that as much as a chunky, substantial size, mug.

Mr Gen and my best friend just love to team up to harass me about the spills in the car, as your Girly-poo did.

Here's an example of one of their simpler multi-tools. Fits in a little belt pouch.

166. What a hoot!
It's hardly an original description, but nonetheless...

I actually don't have a Leatherman, although I've coveted one for a while. I'll have to remember to add that to my Essential Toys list.

115. My notebook.
Why waste hundreds of bucks on a complex PDA when a pen and paper serves just as well, and at a cost of a couple bucks?

I have it with me always, so I can write down appointments as I make them over the phone.

who needs gadgets? They only break -- or the batteries die -- or they fall into a puddle -- paper and pen never fails.

Thats about it other than my keys. Over the years a pocket knife has been a very handy item to have. You never know when you will need to cut something.

I like that one. And I learned how to open beer bottles with the flat back of a knife so I don't need no stinking bottle opener anymore.

141. No, but I can take a few.
I bought it at Target earlier today. It's a big shoulder bag with really cool handles. :D It's burnt orange, which is apparently a very hot color this season. :) I swapped stuff out of my old purse and I already like the new bag better.

145. Yes, with little circles of color woven in.
:) It is indeed roomy. It's only got one inside pocket, so if you like pockets or dividers in a bag, that won't work. But I keep my keys and phone in the pocket like I did all my other purses, and it works fine for me.

Smokes, lighter, wallet (occasionally some cash, cards- debit and credit, driver's licence, health care), Leatherman tool, cell phone, iPod, lately my new digital camera (don't know for how long), pen, paper, keys.

When working I add- film camera, ID, Palm Pilot, more pens, notebook, flashlight, pepper spray, dog treats, and a fair bit of etc.

On edit: I love my Leatherman 200

163. Patch kit, spare tube and tire levers
In my pack, which ends up strapped onto my bike rack. When I'm off the horse, they come along whether they like it or not. The only exception is when there's ice and snow on the ground forcing me to take the train, then I'll take out repair bag.

Trivial Pursuit Tip: The bag was originally a tent bag someone lost on Crete. I was out swimming and saw it drifting deep on the bottom. It took a few deep dives with bursting ears to retrieve it.
