Does anyone else think Matt Damon's acting basically sucks?
I just tried to watch 'The Departed', ended up shutting it off because of him.
His acting just annoys me for some reason, but I can't put my finger on it exactly.
Maybe the old saying is true, "There is no accounting for taste."

1. Actually
I just watched the Departed last night and thought he did fine and I loved the movie overall.

2. He's OK I suppose.
I have to admit that I've enjoyed a lot of the films he's been in. Not necessarily []i]because of him, mind you.

I have a similar reaction to Tom Cruise. That guy can fuck up an otherwise decent movie for me. It might just be a personal thing.

3. no. I thought he was great in The Departed
he played a bad guy for a change.
I'm not a big fan of his, but his acting in that movie
changed my mind.

5. I think his acting is fine, but I can't get past the fact that he looks like a college
frat boy. He has kind of a "preppy" look to him. That was particularly troublesome (for me) in the Bourne films. But I know that most people liked him in those.

6. My feelings exactly
You hit the nail right on the head.

I enjoyed the "Bourne" movies even though I think someone else would have been more suited to the role. I think he's a good actor. He's just too often miscast. I'm waiting for the remake of "Patton" starring Matt Damon. Wouldn't surprise me. :(

13. Actually, I think that was the point of casting him in Bourne.
The last thing an assassin wants to look like is an assassin- a frat boy look is exactly what they need for him to be successful in his work. He's easy to overlook in a crowd- he blends in well and disappears easily.

I thought he played the part well.

I don't have a problem at all with his acting.

It's just that the very thing that was supposed to work for him against his opponents in the movie also works against me when watching the movie. I sometimes have difficulty trying not to think I'm watching Matt Damon instead of the character. I have to make an effort. He looks like he's nineteen and sometimes that's a bit of a problem for me to get around. A problem many don't have, but unfortunately I do. :(

I understand what you're saying about the "frat-boy/assassin" look. I see your point, he did a good job in the "Bourne" movies. I just think if I was casting the movie I'd look around some more. Not for someone who exuded menace from every pore, just someone not quite as fresh-faced.

32. He was amazing in that, as was the guy who played Capote
Damon really bared his soul in that movie. How many leading actors would stand untanned on a beach in lime green swim trunks from the fifties without having muscle tone...I admired his courage in that role so much andit's one of my favorite movies ever.

8. He does come across as a bit wooden, and preppy.
Sometimes I wish he'd emote a little more, and get a new haircut.

But overall I've been pretty impressed by his performances, and I've liked the movies he was in.

9. Nope. I think he tends to choose roles where his acting
ability is superfluous. But in "The Talented Mr. Ripley" he was amazing, just amazing.

12. *Gasp!*
He's one of my favorite actors!

To me he's a virtual chameleon. I love watching actors whom I can't see "act" when I watch their movies. Matt Damon always does that for me.

16. i think he's quite good -- the problem for me --
with most big male movie stars is the vehicle -- not the actor.

i prefer smaller more intimate films to these gargantuan big budget thingys.

at least in that arena --i'm not a size queen -- hmmm? how do i feel about that?

while not fav type of movie i thought he was quite good in the bourne films and mr ripley.

i liked his performance in that movie with ben affleck that started them out -- but i hated robin williams and i kept thinking this COULD be a brilliant movie if it were somehow focused more on the boy and his interior conflicts -- but what ever.

i find his looks refreshing -- if we're talking type -- i get bored with so many brooding types.

it's nice to see something different in a guy who actually has some versatility.

17. He's a competent enough actor
But he so often plays the same persona over and over: a smug, super-confident asshat. That half-smirk on his face is so damned annoying. He comes across like the guy who used to beat you up in school. He was good in Ripley; apparently the director made him earn his pay for once. As for Bourne, it's always said the book is better than the movie, but in Ludlum's case that should never be true. Alas, with Jockstrap in the starring role, the books acquire a depth and luster I'd never have accorded them before.

My verdict: lackluster asshat. Redeeming moment: the NSA speech in Good Will Hunting.

21. I thought he played the role correctly in "The Departed" -
There was nothing about that character that I found attractive, he was about as cold and calculating as one can get. That was the point.

And other movies as well....Good Will Hunting, Talented Mr. Ripley....I think he's actually one of the better younger actors out there. He actually has talent and doesn't need to depend on his youthful looks.

23. I'm really nervous about the rumors of him getting the part of young James T. Kirk
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0796366/

From ET Online's Insider column by Marc S. Malkin:

Will MATT DAMON get beamed up? Could happen. I'm told J.J. ABRAMS is very interested in casting the Oscar-winning Damon as a young Captain Kirk in the upcoming 'Star Trek' movie that he's directing and producing. He's so interested that he's apparently already sought support from the original Kirk, WILLIAM SHATNER. "Shatner gave his blessing," my source says. "J.J. got his approval." Damon first popped up in Trekkie circles as soon as the Abrams-'Star Trek' deal was announced. Rumor had it that the new movie would center on Kirk and Spock's early days at a space academy. "J.J. wants Damon as Capt. Kirk," my source reports. "He really loves the idea."

He's already about 10 years older than DeForest Kelley in the original series.

37. Whenever a Damon char. tries to flirt/pick up a girl in a film, he always
seems to do it the same smirky way... it seems fake. But I do think he is a good actor. The Departed disasppointed me but it was not Damon's fault. The plot got got stuck 2/3 the way through. All those dumb sneaky cell phone calls were ridiculous. They never really handled that love triange with any depth. And Scorcese does not know how to deal with women in his films.
