DEFINATLEY (grammar nazis, check in and let's party!)
Don't you love reading that word, in that spelling, as part of a sales pitch to purchase a 9 month old, $600 parrot who has clearly been neglected by the store staff?

DEFINITELY! x(

2. Okay, so I should have spelled it "Nazis" with a capital N.
It is spelled "Grammar" and I didn't edit the post...

5. I know you spelled grammar right.
I spelled it the same as you did so why would I suggest that it was wrong?.

I meant that spelling definitely as definately is a spelling problem, not a grammar problem.

4. "LOOSE" in place of "LOSE" is another annoyance as well...
I don't recall, and it was on another forum, but two big-ass whoopsies had been committed. It said "Loose the _____" - I don't recall the third word. Which is sad, as it was wrong too!

Now I understand why corporations summarily throw out poorly structured resumes. The "DEFINATLEY" really caught my attention. And it's easy to tell apart occasional typos from recurring grotesque mistakes, and I'll admit I'm not perfect either... But I usually pass grammatical astuteness tests whereas many "definatley" don't...

8. What IS it with that word??
Drives me crazy--I see it spelled "definately" just as often as the correct spelling--likely more often, although I don't keep a running tally.

That and "women" for ONE WOMAN. Didn't we learn those funky plurals in third grade? And if people use "women" to refer to one woman, do those same people use "men" to refer to one man? Betcha they don't...

Yeah, I'm a grammar nazi, and proud of it.

14. Some spell by listening to the phonetic inflection. Therefore,
"Definatley" could be a result of hearing somebody speak the word on a consistently poor level.

OTOH, maybe they were simply sleeping or snogging during English 101...

12. It doesn't make sense
Is it saying "Bad grammar makes me thus" or "Bad grammar makes me"?

Also, "bad" should be up, and there should be a period after (sic).

:P

Oh, and her job involves EDITING AND PROOFREADING. :grr:

Yes, I know we all make mistakes of that sort sooner or later, especially when we're tired. But still...

And don't get me started on incorrect use of commas.

16. Commas, did you say, commas, that you have, a problem, with, commas,,?

Sorry, I couldn't resist... The comma is very important. I mean, it can really change the meaning of a paragraph if a writer isn't careful... CBS news had an article last week and they missed out on a comma... whoa boy... (I think they had corrected it...)

24. Their here!
Everyone needs to get they're stuff!

Ouch. Apart from the wrong form of "their," the sentence has numerical disagreement between subject and object. EveryONE is singular. It may seem picky, but there are times when it creates some confusion. This is especially true when the writer does not have the excuse of gender neutrality.

Every woman has a right to control their body.

Huh? Whose body? What group of people is the woman in the subject trying to control? Oh, the writer means "her body."

"Expletive" is a word that is not any proper part of speech but is only present to make the sentence subjectively sound better. Both of these are correct:
Take the stuff you brought here.
Take the stuff that you brought here. "That" is an expletive.

The reason people think expletive means foul language is because the press did not want to accuse Nixon of using foul language when they releases transcripts of Oval Office tapes. Instead of writing "obscenity deleted" the editors wrote "expletive deleted." That meant that the words omitted added nothing to the transcript.

26. Using the incorrect case
I can't believe how many people don't know when to use "I" or "me." It absolutely drives me crazy when I hear "between you and I." It's "between you and me," you idiot. How people ever got beyond 10th grade without understanding different cases is beyond me.

using an Oprah word. Also, "allot, or alot," as one word cracks me up. At least I try to be correct by looking something up. I can always rely on the smart people here to clarify something if I need help.

Irregardless, I tend to loose my train of thought alot.
