Mondays 'IN' The Undergroundrailroad

Key Lime Pie

Hello everybody and welcome to Mondays IN The Undergroundrailroad. I hope everyone had a marvelous weekend and I'm here to jump-start your week ahead. So how is everyone feeling as we get closer and closer to the Iowa caucuses ? I really think it's great that we have a community, our DU community, that allows us to discuss the candidates and the debates. Just think, in less than 10 months we will elect a NEW President! It's getting exciting!

For newcomers to Mondays 'IN' The UGRR I will roll out the red carpet just for you! We are a fun loving "bunch" and I want you to feel comfortable here and speak your mind.

Our dessert for today is key lime pie. It is very easy to prepare.

Tavis Smiley, Extraordinary Talk

As I hear Tavis Smiley speak, I think to myself, 'WOW, listen to his voice, what a beautiful thing!'. I mean Tavis Talks! And the MORE you listen to Tavis, that intellectual "blue" light comes on in your head and the next thing you know, you find yourself on your feet stompin, dancin, and jammin. Oops! I mean, stomp-ing, danc-ing and jamm-ing. Sorry, I lost myself for a moment there. Well, so what! TIME MAGAZINE has named Tavis Smiley as one of America's "50 promising young leaders" and NEWSWEEK profiled him as one of the "20 people changing how Americans get their news", so my hallelujah moment continues, STOMPIN, DANCIN, AND JAMMIN!
First, the show, The Tavis Smiley Show is a result of an ongoing collaboration between NPR and a consortium of African-American public radio stations. Tavis challenges his listeners with a program of high-profile guests, many whom are African-American legends and a "bling-bling" of straight talk. Tavis speaks his mind with insightful conversation and dares his listeners to look BEYOND the status-quo and experience reality. Sometimes that "reality" is painful, ugly, frustrating, tragic and terrible. But when you listen to Tavis having an extended conversation with his guests, some African-American, some not, you hear vivid accounts and experiences that link you, the viewer, to Tavis and the everyday experience of life.

Check out Tavistalks.com that has an interactive feel. There are links to the broadcast in your area, his bio (graduate of Indiana University, and was previously a top aide to former Los Angeles mayor Tom Bradley), dates/time for his speaking tour titled, "PASS THE MIC", and his foundation (The Tavis Smiley Foundation - mission is to enlighten, encourage and empower youth by providing leadership skills that will promote and enhance the quality of life for themselves, their communities and our world).

Tavis is also an author. Doing What's Right : How to Fight for What You Believe--And Make a Difference and How to Make Black America Better : Leading African Americans Speak Out. Both are excellent!

This sister is especially grateful to PBS for hosting the TAVIS SMILEY SHOW. We need to HEAR the voice of Tavis Smiley loud and clear. It is so important to understand the extra weight, heavy weight that discrimination imposes not only on blacks, but everybody who interacts with blacks on an everyday basis. Do you NOT interact with blacks on an everyday basis? Well, you can start by turning on your radio to NPR TAVIS TALKS. And yes, he does it so very VERY well.

Maria Celeste Arraras

Lester Holt

BROWN/BLACK PRESIDENTIAL FORUM

I would like to thank the award-winning journalist Maria Celeste of Telemundo and MSNBC Anchor, Lester Holt also an award-winning broadcast journalist, for the outstanding job they did in moderating the Iowa Brown and Black Presidential Forum.

I make no judgments on who won, who lost. It is with great persistence and patience, being an African-American voter, that the words "BLACK"/"BROWN" are being introduced into a Presidential Debate. I think all the presidential candidates facilitated a powerful sense of issues that are important to the African-American, Latino, Native American, and yes, the BROWN/BLACK skinned people of America. I would think specific instances of discrimination in public schools (NO, they are not equal), neighborhoods (yes, segregation still exists), jobs (unemployment rates for Brown/Blacks are higher), businesses (job incentives for Black/Brown entrepreneurs), and finally, how Black/Brown Americans contend with everyday discrimination. WE MUST focus in detail, how does America deal with issues of diversity and confronting bigotry.

There are so many issues that are unique to Black/Brown Americans. I'm sorry to say we do live in 2 Americas. We need a sophisticated repertoire of methods and tactics that can help overcome racism. I listened to just about all the candidates invoke the name of Dr. Martin Luther King during the debate. Suddenly, I became very sad, even emotional. My goodness, we STILL have such a long way to go. Actually, the classification, the term, "Black/Brown" is so appropriate in our American of today. We are a melting pot of many different races and it's time to start adapting our America to LOOK like that. My thoughts are, yes, recognize racism, recognize discrimination, and try to deal with it as we pursue our goals in this country. We can start with recognition. START! Blacks/Browns have been mistreated long enough and it's time for a careful assessment of what needs to be done in this country, that impacts the many issues of BLACKS/BROWNS/WHITES.

Yes, that sounds so much better.

THE BOONDOCKS

So the Boondocks are OUT at The Cincinnati Enquirer

OK, this is the "pink" slip given to Aaron McGruder, creator of THE BOONDOCKS, from Sara Pearce, Assistant Managing Editor/Features of THE CINCINNATI ENQUIRER:

And for those outraged that the low-rated Doonesbury survived while Boondocks didn't, we made the decision to drop Boondocks because we did not want to keep publishing a comic that we regularly needed to censor. During the past year, Boondocks was substituted a number of times because it was deemed inappropriate for a family newspaper. And not just this family newspaper. Editors across the country were making the same decisions.

Our policy is that we publish a comic strip or we don't. Once we start pulling specific strips, as well as entire weeks' worth, it is time to drop that strip. Although Boondocks has its fans, many of you were uncomfortable with it, and at times we were, too.
<snip>
To the hundreds of readers who will be writing me during the next few weeks, I offer this bit of advice: give a comic a six-month tryout, and then let me know whether you still hate it or love it.

Sara Pearce
Assistant Managing Editor/Features
The Cincinnati Enquirer
312 Elm St.
Cincinnati, OH 45202
Fax: (513) 768-8330
spearce@enquirer.com

So THE BOONDOCKS were "deemed inappropriate for a family newspaper". Excuse my emotion-con language but :wtf:

Aaron's Boondock characters always seem to provoke thought, thought from the perspective of Aaron's Black heritage, his love of the hip-hop culture and his studies at the University of Maryland. He graduated with a degree in African-American studies. Aaron decided to take his activism to another level and the result was a cartoon strip, a story about a group of African-American city kids adjusting to life in white suburbia. So BLACK/BROWN people "talking" in an intelligent manner is SHOCKING! and inappropriate for a "family newspaper". It's SHOCKING, I tell you SHOCKING, to discuss Black/Brown culture in our culture, SHOCKING! So let's HIDE the Black people, let's hide the Brown people and all forms of intelligent conversation protected by our constitution. Thanks goodness for the Internet which means you can have access to The Boondocks 24/7.

Without further ado and with MUCH pride, I bring to you, the readers of MONDAYS 'IN' THE UGRR, our weekly feature, THE BOONDOCKS. Oh, and by-the-way, we ain't going NOWHERE. THE BOONDOCKS will remain as the brilliant editorial art form that it is. And yes, Virginia, there are Black/Brown people who look, talk and act like The Boondock characters.

The Boondocks by Aaron McGruder

1. Good Morning, Dearest Mina! I've been waiting by my computer
for you to post the UGRR thread.

Word on Boondocks: If they are censoring you, you know you're doing something right. Boondocks rocks!

Gosh! I LOVE Key Lime Pie! MMMMMM! It's sooooo good. Can I have a slice?

Questions:

1. Mongolian Beef from Wendy Au's 'Wendy's II' restaurant in Tacoma.

2. My movie theme song: Bridge Over Troubled Water, by Simon and Garfunkle. Emotional-montage-halfway-through-the-movie music: Everybody Hurts by R.E.M.

3. NO REPUBLICANS! 'Course my wife wouldn't go for that; my in-laws wouldn't be able to visit.

Love and hugs, Mina. You are the greatest! Have a good week!

Don't you just LOVE Key Lime Pie? MMMMMMM!

OK, a virtual slice just for you!

Well, you know, I thought about your question, censoring me! So I agree, what am I doing right, oh, I mean LEFT! ;-)

Now, let me check you out.

Ummmm. Mangoilian Beef! from Wendy Au's Wendy's II in Tacoma.

You've got the soundtrack of your life in beautiful song, even the emotional "halfway montage" music by R.E.M. (a song I like).

Finally, NO REPUBLICANS ALLOWED, except for the in-laws.

That's good, really good.

Well, I will close by giving you a  and to let you know how much I appreciate your posts every Monday. You are just the best!

Love,

Mina :loveya:

I can relate to your in-law problem. Debate nights can be quite contentious.

Now take your walk, smile and wave :hi:

Welcome to Mondays IN The Undergroundrailroad. Thanks for joining our UGRR "bunch"! I'm so happy you decided to check us out.

Now, let me check out your responses that, btw, I read and answer every week.

1. I see your favorite Chinese Food Take out is Szechuan Tofu, extra spicy! Well, I happen to love tofu! I have never tried it Szechuan style, but I might try it this week and I'll let you know how I liked it.

2. Your theme song would be "Sisters are doing it for themselves". Yeah! I like that and can relate to it.

3. Your "NO" sign would read "No Prejudice or close-mindedness allowed in this house"! Now, you know that's right! I LOVE your "NO" sign!

Thank you so much for your comments and your visit to the UGRR. I will look forward to seeing you in the future.

Warmest regards and peace,

Undergroundrailroad , Mina  :yourock:

3. Good Morning, Sweet Mina,
Edited on Mon Jan-12-04 01:33 PM by Punkingal
I, too, am a Tavis Smiley fan, and have been for a long time. He is just the best, and what a great name he has.

Removing Boondocks smacks of censorship, and it is appalling that people don't realize this.

Key Lime Pie! It is so yummy, but too rich for this early in the morning. I will save mine for dinner.

As for your questions:

1. Crab Rangoon, Wonton Soup, and Pork Fried Rice. At home, I make delicious Egg Foo Yung, with Brown Sauce, and a nice Pepper Steak. On my long list of things to do is take a Chinese cooking class.

2. My theme song...that is a hard one, but I think a song by Gary Morris,a country singer who made the transition to Broadway a few years ago, "See The Love She Found In Me." It is a love song, but I like to apply the sentiments to life in general, such as the lines from the song, "Give her thorns and she'll find the roses, give her sand, and she'll find the sea, give her rain, and she'll find a rainbow, just see the love she found in me." I try so very hard to find the good in everything, and I have been known to get along well with people who have difficulty with almost everyone else. You can find the good things...you just have to look a little harder sometimes.

3. The sign on my door would be "No Bigotry." Of any kind.

Love ya, Mina. Thanks for the Underground.

27. Hello my friend, who with fondness, I like to call sweetpatatapie :-)
Actually I like sweet potato pie AND pumpkin pie, so it's a joy to see her name.

Well, hello my friend and happy Monday to you. Well, I know have a THIRD pie to add, Key Lime Pie. Do you see a trend here? I need to get away from pies and Chinese food (BUT I CAN'T!).

You know, by the end of Monday midnight, I'm read to head out to just buy a pie and or order Chinese takeout. Very interesting dishes which brings me to your selection of Crab Rangoon, Wonton Soup and Pork Fried Rice! OH! That sounds sooo good. I also like Egg Foo Yung with the Brown Sauce. Chinese cooking class, very interesting.

Your theme song about life means you can find good things, but you have to look a little harder to find them. That is so beautiful! I am familiar with Gary Morris and I like his music. I'm going to have to check that song out.

And on YOUR NO sign? "NO BIGOTRY" of any kind allowed.

Now you know I just LOVE that you said that. I feel so deeply about this and your NO sign just puts it all in it's proper perspective. That is an important sign and we should all have one of those on our doors at home, at work, in social settings, always.

BRAVO!

Have a wonderful evening and, well, your just the greatest!

Love ya,

Mina :loveya:

Sucks about Boondocks, I honestly wonder what sort of stuff they needed to censor because it wasn't 'family' orientated.

ohwell

Here's my answers

1. I don't like chinese at all, if i ever eat anywhere else then our restaurant or at home it's mexican :9

2. Hmm theme song hehe, I don't know any song reflecting me so I'll just pick the best song ever and that's "Until the end of the world" By U2

3. oh this is an easy one. "No BS!"

29. Hi ya Kamika! Hey, how are you?
I don't even believe that lame excuse they gave. I mean what happens when MTV and BET meet in Cincinnati . Jeez.

Oh well.

Ok, Kamika, let me check you out.

Don't care for Chinese food but when you eat out, it's Mexican food. Cool.
The theme song that best fits is "Until the end of the world" By U2. That's a great selection, but for you I was thinking about a song like Pink Cadillac (or something about Cars) because you like Cameros.

But your "NO" sign is direct and to the point: "NO BS"! You go with your bad self!

I will see you next week!

Love,

Yes, how about something from Miles Davis, "Kind of Blue". Miles Davis is one of my all time favorite jazz artists.

And your "NO" sign would read, "NO INTOLERANCE"! That is just great, wonderful and I do agree.

I am so proud of the responses I'm reading in the UGRR today.

1. There's this extreme manifestation of Brazilian multicultural debauchery here we call the... CHINESE & JAPANESE ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT! My favorite is a restaurant called Kotobuki by Botafogo beach in Rio. Kick-ass yakisoba, spring rolls, sushi, sashimi, everything. High floor with a wonderful view to Botafogo beach and the Sugar Loaf. All for abut US$ 10. Yeah, ten.

2. Theme song, hmmmmm. Maybe "Just The Way You Are", Barry White version.

3. No bigotry. (edited to add link)

33. Oh, my. All you can eat Chinese and Japanese for $10.00?
Wow! I am a sushi/sashimi fan of major proportions.

Theme song, would be Barry White's version of "Just The Way You Are". You know, I still can't believe Barry White has departed this world. I am a major fan of his and I have all of his music and that goes a long way back. I'm glad he was around to feel the love of his fans. He was appreciated and his music will live on in music history.

So that's a great song you picked.

And finally, your "NO" sign is, "NO BIGOTRY" and thanks for the link to Night Train's post. I am a "Night Train" fan and I always enjoy his music polls. So thanks for that.

Have a good one JCCyC (what does your DU name mean? It's Cool)

Love and peace,

I think Tavis would be proud to know that he has fans at the Democratic Underground.com and I'm going to e-mail this thread to his show to let him know he has support here.

Your favorite Chinese Food take-out is Cashew Chicken. Ummmm, that sounds so very good PP!

You have to songs to complete the soundtrack for your life, "What's Going On" and Hand in Packet". I know both songs, also Marvin Gaye's version of "What's Going On."

Excellent songs.

And your "NO" sign? LOL, I just LOVE this!

NO MONEY, COME BACK WHEN WE HAVE A DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENT.

Now, that's really good!

Thanks PP for dropping in to the UGRR today. Have a great rest of your week.

8. Hi Mina
thank you so much for your perspective on the debate. I'm going to withhold my judgement as I haven't seen it (will probably stream it in from CNN tomorrow evening), but have seen lots of very partisan (primary camps) reaction, and I'm sorry but I don't consider that trustworthy.
I will say we certainly do still have a long ways to go to join our communities in a healthy way. There IS still so much segregation and it's sad.

As for the Boondocks... well I agree with the poster above, you must be doing something right if your p*ssing people off LOL. But censorship is never right.

now the questions.
1. Favorite Chinese Food Take Out? Sweet and Sour Shrimp

2. If a movie were made about your life, what would the theme song be? 31 flavors by Ani Difranco

3. We see many signs each day that say No Smoking, No Trespassing, No Pets, etc. If you could put an original "No _____" sign on your front door, what would it say? no whinning

36. Indigo, HI! How are you!
I want to mention to all the members of Mondays IN The UGRR that Indigo is one of the original members off Mondays IN The UGRR. I used to have a contest that would allow the members who guessed the correct answers to post next week's questions. Yes, it's been THAT long. But I always and continue to look forward to the posts of Indigo32.

Thanks for the compliment. I do appreciate the Boondocks and the diverse editorial message that they send. Again, and you know this Indigo, that The Boondocks have been apart of Mondays IN The UGRR from day number one.

About the debate. I liked the title "Black/Brown Presidential Forum". This gives a diverse section of our country to address issues that are important to them. This is a first. Our American looks very different now vs. the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's and yes the 90's. I really welcome this forum and look forward to the various segments to follow further down the road.

OK, on to the questions of the day.

Favorite take out is, my favorite, Sweet and Sour Shrimp. I always like this with shrimp fried rice and a tall diet coke (to wash away the "sweet" guilt ;-)

Your theme song, based on your life would be? 31 flavors! Yeah, like that.

And finally, the "NO" sign on your door would be?

"NO WHINING".

That's a good one. I'm really thrilled at the "NO" signs. I like everyone of them.

Have a great week ahead Indigo.

Love,

Mina :loveya:

12. Mina, another great edition of Mondays IN The UGRR! WOW!
I just love, love, love your commentary. You and Tavis have a lot in common. You speak your thoughts Mina and that's what makes Mondays IN The UGRR the great column that it is.

I promise Mina, I'm going to check him out tonight. You can go to his site and listen to his programs 24 hours a day.

I do agree, we must address race and it should be done in the form of legislation. I think we need a lot more than a "conversation". Well Mina, you always "talk" about race on Mondays and I thank you for that.

Questions

1. Chicken and Chinese Vegetables (Lite, no msg).
2. Theme song for my life: Michael Jackson/R Kelly "One More Chance".
3. No "LIES" allowed in my crib. Only "truth" within my four walls.

Mina, catch you next week. Again, thanks for a wonderful visit in the UGRR today! LOTS of good information in the form of your commentary!

Now, let me check you out BJ :)

You like Chicken and Chinese Vegetables (lite, no msg). Ummmm. Sounds good.
I also like your theme song, "One More Chance", by Michael Jackson and R. Kelly. I also purchased MJ "Number Ones" CD.
And your "NO" sign will read, NO LIES.

Love it! Love you too.

13. Wow! Tavis has got an electric smile! I love it. Shame on the
Cincinnati Enquirer. I can't believe people still think we should be sweeping it all under the rug and patting it down.

That said. Hello Mina! It's good to "see" you.

I am still suffering the effects of a Packers' playoff loss...but, there is always next year.

My answers:

1.I love General Tao's Chicken. Although it has to be super mild or it will upset my tummy. I was at Costco the other day and they had it in the frozen foods section. I picked it up to see if it is just as good.

2. If a movie were made of my life....hmmmm, that's a toughy. I guess the theme song would be....stalling for thought time....
Think of Laura/Christopher Cross. I can't really think of one but I'll put that down. Because I would want people to laugh and not cry when they think of me.

3. The sign would read, No keeping up with the Jones'. My husband I are sick and tired of a lot of our friends and family running and spending what they don't have in order to impress. We are simple folk. I don't need a big house, a new car, a diamond ring. I have all I need...already.

Thanks for a great thread Mina!!!

38. Hi Laura! Let's go and have a Chinese lunch! I just LOVE
General Tao's Chicken. OK, I'll have my selection "mild" so we can share our dishes! I would love it when a group would order a Chinese 'dish' and each would sample the other's dish.

Well, Tavis is the greatest! Love his show and I see you like his smile :) He does have a very nice smile and a great personality.

So you like Christopher Cross (Sailing, love that song)!

Your "NO" sign would be? NO keeping up with the Jones' .
I agree. Pretentious folk, need not apply ! We've got hunger, real hunger to address in this country. Waste/excess is NOT a "good thing"!

I just LOVE your posts Laura! You always tell it like it is.

Love,

15. Key Lime Pie!! Key Lime Pie!!!
Happy Monday Mina!! Hope you are well.

Just got out of the Atkins thread, now I'm jonesing for dessert. Go figure.

We don't get Tavis Smiley on UNCTV yet. I hope there will be enough clamor for it. I've so enjoyed him on the radio.

Boondocks - *SNARF* He always gets a laugh out of me! :D Sometimes the truth hurts! How stupid is the Enquirer? They're just driving people away from the paper to other sources. Maybe that's a good thing. I don't read that paper anyway. FWIW, Gary Trudeau got censored on a regular basis, espcially during the Nixon Admin for portraying the whitehouse with a brick wall slowly being built in front of it. :P

I'm sure Aron will survive in fine style! :D

Questions:

1. Favorite Chinese Food Take Out?

Mongolian Beef or Hunan Chicken. I love the hot stuff. :9

2. If a movie were made about your life, what would the theme song be?

Natalie Merchant's "Wonder". It's really more about the wonder of each individual to me.

3. We see many signs each day that say No Smoking, No Trespassing, No Pets, etc. If you could put an original "No _____" sign on your front door, what would it say?

"NO IGNORANCE!"

The movie soundtrack of your life would be, "Wonder" by Natalie Merchant. Beautiful song.

And the "no" sign on your door would read?

NO IGNORANCE! :yourock:

1. Favorite Chinese Food Take Out?
General Tao's chicken
2. If a movie were made about your life, what would the theme song be?
Whatever the beginning theme to Goodfellas is
3. We see many signs each day that say No Smoking, No Trespassing, No Pets, etc. If you could put an original "No _____" sign on your front door, what would it say?
After today, no one under 16 allowed, like jesus christ my little brother basically allows my other little brother to trash the place.
Been a sorta tough day but I can make it, just having one because I nearly lost my new cell phone, yes I bought it, but nearly lost it, got some school paranoa etc.

42. Good Evening Mr. JohnKleeb! Oh John, you got the cell phone!!!!
Now you hold on tight to that phone! I remember you wanted one so much. I'm so glad you got it.

Well, I know your a very busy and popular gent at DU, so let me get right to those questions!

OK, you like General Tao's Chicken. Yes, I LOVE General Tao's Chicken and basically, I love Chinese food. I could sample everything on the menu and find something positive to say about it. But "The General" as I like to call it , is one my favorites.

So, we start your life out with the theme from the gangster, GOODFELLAS.
You are so smart, well informed about politics, very personable. I guess we're talking about the music, so the music from the soundtrack was very good. Actually, Goodfellas in one of my favorite movies.

And the NO sign on your bedroom door will say?

NO ONE UNDER 16 ALLOWED

18. Huzzah and good afternoon!
Happy Monday darling Mina!

I am not surprised, though I am saddened, that the Cincinnati Enquirer chose to drop Aaron McGruder’s unbelievably awesome strip. It seems that all media tends to bend to the will of the most vocal minority, and even those who do not necessarily find his work “offensive” will go along as part of a larger political or social agenda.

Look at how Terry Raccolta galvanized the conservatives against “Married with Children”. Her argument was “I don’t want my kids to watch it…” and became “no one should watch this” once she had a little power and money behind her.

When will we learn to ignore the things that we find distatestful, offensive, or repellent? I already avoid commercial radio, virtually all network television, most print media, and even 2/3rds of NPRs White Suburban Middle Class Culture. I don’t see movies that I think will be offensive (okay, that’s a lie… I make a point to see them, but I have to write about them so it balances out). However, what separates me and so many like me in the majority is that we don’t care if other people watch/listen to/or read these things. Just because I think fans Friends is possibly the worst 30 minutes ever broadcast at any time regardless of air-date, doesn’t mean I want NBC to axe the show. I guess I am one of the rare characters who is smart enough to do something I enjoy rather than bitching about what I don’t.

We have the world’s worst comic here in what is arguable the world’s worst paper: The Manchester Union Leader and Mallard Fillmore. I make my opinion known by no reading it.

I watched the rerun of the MSNBC debate today and was impressed with both Lester Holt and Maria Arras. However, the one question that made me want to punt the TV through the window and into the snow was Ms. Arras’ question about knowingly or unknowingly hiring illegal immigrants. I think that is possibly the stupidest question yet in this series of debates and only just edges out everything that Manchester Village Idiot Scott Spradlin asked in the WMUR debate.

Questions of The Day

1. Favorite Chinese Food Take Out?

Pork Egg Foo Yong with a side of Kung Pao Chicken. I also like Moo Shi anything but it’s so messy you almost have to eat it while showering so I only order it if I have a rain slicker and several cleaning products handy.

2. If a movie were made about your life, what would the theme song be?

The Last Straw by Marillion,
Lyrics by Derek William Dick

Hotel hobbies padding dawns hollow corridors
A typewriter cackles out a stream of memories

Drying out a conscience, evicting a nightmare
Opening the doors for the dreams to come home

We live out lives in private shells
Ignore our senses and fool ourselves
To thinking that out there there's someone else cares
Someone to answer all our prayers, all our prayers...

Are we too far gone, are we so irresponsible
Have we lost our balls, or do we just not care
We're terminal cases that keep talking medicine
Pretending the end isn't quite that near
We make futile gestures, act to the cameras
With our made up faces and PR smiles
And when the angel comes down, down to deliver us
We'll find out that after all, we're only men of straw

But everything is still the same
Passing the time passing the blame
We carry on in the same old way
We'll find out we left it too late one day to say what we meant to say

Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the water
Those problems seem to arise the ones you never really thought of
The feeling you get is similar to something like drowning
Out of your mind, you're out of your depth, you should have taken soundings
Clutching at straws, we're clutching at straws, we're clutching at straws

And if you ever come across us don't give us your sympathy
You can buy us a drink and just shake our hands
And you'll recognize by the reflection in our eyes that deep down inside we're all one and the same

We're clutching at straws
We're still drowning
Clutching at straws
We're still drowning, yeah Clutching at straws
I'm still drowning
We're clutching at straws
I'm still drowning

3. We see many signs each day that say No Smoking, No Trespassing, No Pets, etc. If you could put an original "No _____" sign on your front door, what would it say?

It would just say “No” and I’d let the readers fill in the noun.

43. Hello, hello, my wonderful friend! Hello to Mom and Dad.
Happy Monday Tuesday to my darling BigMac.

I feel bad for Aaron McGruder. Such a talented artist, vocal journalist and outspoken advocate and the wording of the announcement was hurtful. I just wonder if a more kinder, gentler, editor would have said it just a little bit better. Talk about slamming the door in your face! I would really like to know the specific BOONDOCKS that were dangerous to "the children". If you ask me, it's more about "big" children with "old" ideas. I won't lie, I'm bitter about this matter and I plan on doing research, perhaps an interview with both sides to investigate what happened here. I 'm opened minded but I want to be fair to Aaron. Perhaps something was misunderstood in the interpretation of the BOONDOCKS' strip that was published.

I remember Vice President Dan Quayle's criticism of Candice Bergen for glamorizing her role as Murphy Brown and her foray into single parenthood. I go that far back BigMac, but I do remember the critical comments of Married With Children.

I really do have to agree with you about "controlled" media. I very seldom watch network television except for Nightline. It's something I have watched from it's inception and I always said as long as I'm alive, just one more day to see the "date", I will at least watch the first 5 minutes to catch the intro and the topic. Now, of course, I can just let the INTERNET stream it or email me the segments. Still, I have to hold on to something, and for me that's Nightline. I have NEVER seen "Friends", Sex In The City (HBO), or any popular sitcoms. The last sitcom I watched was "THE JEFFERSON'S". I didn't buy a color TV until I was an adult and very seldom watched it. I like my movies in black and white (yes, the old science fiction ones that your Mom loves so much). And in an odd way, the movies that I watch are ones that I have a professional connection to. Oh yes, I like those movies.

Well, I have been typing enough! On to the questions:

Wait, I first have to address the question that Maria Celeste Arraras asked. You see, this is a very common issue in the Hispanic community. I don't want to give away much about the geography where I live, but this has become the cause of the moment. It was an inappropriate question at an inappropriate moment. NO ONE was going to answer that question if they, in fact, had hired an undocumented worker. I think she should have said it in a different manner. Let's be honest, people work "off the books" all the time. Black/Brown/White/Red/Yellow. It's about hiding INCOME and that's against the law. I think she backed herself in a corner, but I appreciated her question, it was the timing that was in question. But let me tell you, that question WILL enter the political arena again.

OK, the questions, and I'll be brief.

I just LOVE Kung Pao Chicken. I love it with sticky white rice and extra peanuts. I can't make it and I wouldn't even try. Why attempt to do something that someone else can do better, even as an art form, and Chinese cooking IS an art form and I'm willing to pay.

Your movie life theme song would be? The Last Straw by Marillion, lyrics by Derek William Dick. Thanks for providing the lyrics.

We live out lives in private shells
Ignore our senses and fool ourselves
To thinking that out there there's someone else cares
Someone to answer all our prayers, all our prayers...

And finally your "NO" sign would read:

NO __________________________________.

You be the judge. Well here comes da judge a la Flip Wilson.

I would fill the blank to say NO PAIN .

See you in two weeks my darling Big Mac, Mrs. BigMac, BigMac Jr. and finally, your Mother. A person, who I have come to admire in this column via your writing about her. You really should write a book about her, she is very unique.

Love,

Mina :loveya:

I am a Tavis fan and a Boondocks fan. I can always look forward to "truth" on Mondays coming from you and your dynamic commentary.

Ummm, that key-lime pie looks good. I might just make one using your link.

I loved the debate last night, I think it was the best one!

On to the questions, good questions!

1. My favorite Chinese takeout food is shrimp-fried rice and dumplings.

2. My song, would be YESTERDAY. I do believe in "yesterday" and the work of Civil Rights and Dr. Martin Luther King. I would move a few words around like ("why he had to go, I don't know"). I don't listen to music very much except the church music that I love.

3. No "smoking" allowed. I don't think it's healthy for anyone to smoke.

Mina, I want to thank you for an outstanding Monday in the UGRR. You are just a sweetie.

Have a great week Mina and DU.

50. Zen-Tupac is in the Undergroundrailroad! (((Hug))) How are you and yes
SHAFT would be one of my all time favorite films. I'm speaking the original with Richard Roundtree. Zen-T, why does this *NOT* surprise me that you picked this song to be the song track of your life? YOU ARE DA BOMB ZEN! I mean you keep surprising me and then for extra special effects, you touch a nerve and say SHAFT, you baddddd mother____(Shut Yo Mouth!). There is logic in your choice. You are really something else Zen, and I mean that as the highest compliment.

Theme from Shaft
By: Isaac Hayes

They say this cat Shaft is a bad mother
SHUT YOUR MOUTH!
I'm talking' 'bout Shaft.
THEN WE CAN DIG IT!

My other favorite Zen-T was Cafe Regio's when John Shaft takes his cab ride.

HOCKEY ("got it")

Now, your favorite Chinese take-out is Crazy Chicken. You know Zen-T, that was a dance back in *my* day. In fact, we called it the FUNKY, crazy chicken! I have not heard of this dish but I will Google it for NYC to see if I can find a restaurant that prepares it. Crazy Chicken.

And finally, we have a "no" sign from answer which is??

NO TROLLS (this means YOU)

.

I just LOVE it! Zen, you are just the greatest. Here's a  from me to you :loveya:

Great board - and I loved the comic strip.

1) I buy egg rolls, but am not a big fan of Chinese food

2) Madonna's "Music"

3) No smoking is one I REALLY wish I could put up, but can't, because I live with smokers. An original sign could be: No Bush Loving.

52. Hi mvd and thanks for your kind words.

I'm going to get the red carpet out for you and give you an official welcome for 2004!
Thanks for jumping in to say hello, visit the UGRR and partake in the questions.

Now, you buy eggs rolls, but not a big fan of Chinese food. Totally understand. I think it's important that we evaluate what we put in our bodies. There are pros/cons about Chinese food and how it's prepared. I just like it because when I was growing up that was the only restaurant that my parents would take me to that served ethnic food. I have friends who are disappointed in the preparation of Chinese food, pointing out the chemicals. All of this makes sense to me, but again, that Pavlovian bell goes OFF in my head when I see those neon signs flashing "Chinese Food Take-Out".`

The soundtrack that would profile your life would be Madonna's "music". I don't know very much about her music. I like her activism and her children's books. I have watched her evolve into an activist who lends her name to important causes.

Your "no" sign would read:

NO BUSH LOVING

I couldn't agree MORE mvd.

Again, thanks for dropping in to say hello and I hope to see you again in the future.

Love and peace,

Undergroundrailroad Mina

24. Happy Monday
How are you doing, Mina? :hi:

Tavis Smiley. His name brings back memories for me. I haven't heard his new show, but I do recall listening to him a decade or so ago when I lived in Los Angeles. He and Ruben Naverette had a show on a local talk radio station there back in the days shortly before commercial talk radio got completely taken over by right-wingers. I really used to enjoy talk radio back in the late 80s and early 90s. I had to give it up completely by around 1994 or 1995, though, as all the people worth listening to were getting pushed out.

:-(

On to the questions!

1. Favorite Chinese Food Take Out?

2. If a movie were made about your life, what would the theme song be?

3. We see many signs each day that say No Smoking, No Trespassing, No Pets, etc. If you could put an original "No _____" sign on your front door, what would it say?

(1) Don't take out Chinese much. But I do love steamed dumplings, so I'll pick that.

(2) Must say I've never thought about this one.

(3) Another one I've never thought about. We don't have too many restrictions at our place. How about "No Bushes!" :-)

53. Hi Professor Peter! Happy New Year. May all your dreams come true.
Thanks for sharing your memories. Tavis has grown as a broadcast journalist and his link with NPR does give him a bigger audience. This is good because he is a very interesting person. Yes, he is opinionated and thats what makes him enjoyable to listen to. Talk radio has changed. I mean if THE BOONDOCKS are deemed as inappropriate, what about Tavis? Not a person to shy away from the Mic. But he is professional and surprises me every time I listen to him. Last year I caught him on CNN's TALK BACK LIVE and he worked that audience. I wish great things for Tavis Smiley.

On to the questions!

Steamed Dumplings, ummmmm. Love them. Here ya go Peter :)

Your "no" sign would simply say, and it's to the point,

NO BUSHES

and "no" means, "NO"!

Have a wonderful rest of your week and thanks for dropping into the UGRR to say hello. I really appreciate your support.

28. Boondocks rules! I'm pissed!
"we did not want to keep publishing a comic that we regularly needed to censor" Needed to censor? They needed to? This makes me want to pull out all my hair.

Okay, on to happier things:

1. Favorite Chinese Food Take Out?

scallion pancakes and chicken chow mein from Chinese Musician in Brooklyn

2. If a movie were made about your life, what would the theme song be?

Gut Pageant by Kristin Hersh

That fine fever brought us here
Lambasted eyeballs
When we kiss the dirt
The orchids laugh

What a gut pageant
We could play for hours
What a gut pageant
Meat for the flowers

You break out of a paper bag
And wake up on the street
Just kidding
You don't have to go

I asked him why the grass is blue
And stray boys don't go home
Why four a.m's so screwy
He says " Sleep through it "

What a gut pageant
We could play for hours
What a gut pageant
Meat for the flowers

Not too special not too strange
Just the way I like 'em
You find an empty promise and stick by it

Not too pretty, not too sweet
Just the way I like you
When you kiss the dirt
The orchids laugh, harder than me

Tell me another one
I could sit for hours
When anyone laughs
I know I'm a coward

What a gut pageant
We could play for hours
When we kiss the dirt
The orchids laugh, harder than me.

The Boondocks are my favorite comic strip (except maybe Calvin and Hobbes) and I think that is so messed up that they are taking it out of a paper! It's like you said, people don't like black people in the media who look intelligent. It's such BS.

Anyway, to answer the ?s:

1. I have fun making my own eggrolls. My dad's coworker from Vietnam taught us how to make them. Yum!

2. ooh, that's a good question. See my sig line.

3. Hypocrites. They drive me mad!!

56. Hi Breezygirl! I haven't seen you in a while, but the UGRR door is always
open for your visits.

Thanks for your comments in the defense of The BOONDOCKS. As you stated, it is very wrong and the standard they are holding Aaron McGruder to is wrong. This is how he views his culture, his world. Yes, it is BS, big time! And the insulting language in the article was offensive to me.

Thanks for being a BOONDOCK fan.

Anyway, on to the questions:

You make your own egg rolls. How cool is that! How special that your dad's co-worker from Vietnam taught you how to make them. Yum, indeed!

Your sig. line is noted, dream those dreams.

And your "NO" sign reads as follows:

NO HYPOCRITES

.

Short and to the point!

I am elated over the responses to that 3rd question. Everyone surprised me with their "NO______" and the answers are all original.

Breezygirl, once again, thank you for dropping in to Mondays IN The UGRR to check things out and to say hello.

Love,

Mina :loveya:

39. I've been getting "Boondocks" e-mailed to me for months--
I've never seen anything overly risque' about it.

Hey, Mina! Thinking about you lots . . .!

45. Hi Mina! Thanx for the recipe!
I just dearly love Key Lime Pie; the only pie I love more is Pecan. Say, you'll be glad to know that I've fully recovered from my surgery, that ugly outsie is now a cute li'l insie. A little lopsided, but still a major improvement. OK, to the questions:

1. Favorite Chinese Food Take Out?

We never do Chinese take out, I do it myself at home. Strictly authentic. We have two large Chinese supermarkets in Calgary, I could spend hours in them. I have all the utensils, two woks (one electric - don't laugh, it works), deep fryer, you name it. I love to do three or four dishes at once, Mrs. Ironflange says it's like watching Iron Chef when I get going. Great fun. I even make my own won tons and spring rolls. PS I'm not even Chinese, I'm 100% Ukrainian. I also make perogies and cabbage rolls.

2. If a movie were made about your life, what would the theme song be?

That's a tough one. Something like "Imagine." Yeah, it's a little sappy, but it's how I feel.

3. We see many signs each day that say No Smoking, No Trespassing, No Pets, etc. If you could put an original "No _____" sign on your front door, what would it say?

No negativity!

58. Ironflange! Where have you been and yes, I was worried about you!
Now don't go getting me upset! I was checking your post surgical progress and then, your gone! Well, I 'm just so glad to hear from you. Now here's a tight, tight, :)

Now, let's see if I can interest you in Chinese Food.

Now look at you! Your a chef, making all kinds of wonderful Chinese dishes at home. You have all the authentic tools of the trade to authenticate your dishes. You make won tons and spring rolls. WOW! One of my posters, just posted that she makes her own spring rolls too. How did you learn to prepare Chinese Food? I see your making Mrs. Ironflange happy as well. She probably enjoys watching you cook and benefits from the delicious food. I also like the Iron Chef. I don't watch much television, but I was so impressed with the Iron Chef and he is so entertaining.

Now, a movie soundtrack for your life. It would be perhaps, Imagine. OK, now that's a great selection.

And your "NO" sign would be:

NO NEGATIVITY !

I think that's what makes our Monday poster's so unique. We are a positive group !

Well, I have to tell you Ironflange, I am so glad to see you, hear from you and I'm glad to hear that you are recovering just fine.

I'll be back in two weeks. I'll see you then. Here's a

Love,

Mina  :loveya:

46. Greetings Mina!
Edited on Tue Jan-13-04 01:35 AM by scarlet_owl
Key lime pie! MMMMMMM! I like it made with cream cheese. I missed the Brown and Black Presidential Forum. As a Hispanic voter, I think the issues of race and discrimination are very important and need to be addressed. There is still so much inequality, especially in legal matters, education, and employment.

Good thing I can always see the Boondocks on the internet. In my opinion, it is the best strip running. I don't think our local paper runs it.

To answer your questions:

1. I love chicken lo mein or chicken and broccoli. There used to be a place around here that made the best garlic broccoli, but they closed.

2. That's a hard one. I think "They Call Me Big Mama" by Big Mama Thornton. I'm a big mama myself and that song gets me dancing!

3. My sign would read "no hats". Call me old-fashioned, but I don't like it when men wear hats inside. I was just brought up that way. My sister's boyfriend never takes his off and it drives me nuts! Especially at the dinner table. Sorry about the mini-rant.

See you in two weeks!

59. Hello Scarlet_owl! How are you? Umm Key Lime Pie, ;-)
I have tasted the Key Lime Pie version with cream cheese and it's beyond words!

I posted the link to the "Brown/Black" Presidential debate transcript in this thread. I know that it's not the same as seeing the candidates on the stage interacting with each other. There were several dynamic moments in that debate. As you point out, your a Hispanic voter and both of us have so much in common with the issues that we're confronted with on a daily basis.

Thank goodness we have access to the Internet and can view The Boondocks. I'm not sure if everyone has INTERNET access and this deprives readers the opportunity to read the strip.

But yes, we both agree that race matters and there is still so much inequality, especially in legal matters, education, and employment.

Your favorite Chinese take-out is Chicken lo mein (yummy) and Chicken with Broccoli (my low cal option).
The song that resembles your life is "They Call Me Big Mamma", a song that reflect happiness.

Your "NO" sign would read:

NO HATS

. I was raised the exact same way and it was considered very disrespectful to wear your hat and your sunglasses in the house. Old fashioned? Yes! But I agree with that dinner table etiquette. Why do you need a hat or sunglasses on at the dinner table??

Thanks Scarlet for dropping in to say hello and provide insightful commentary in the UGRR.

You've been a great friend to Mondays IN The UGRR and I appreciate it very much. See you in two weeks Scarlet.

Love,

Mina :loveya: :yourock:

48. Good (Monday) Evening
Thanks for the info about Mr. Smiley - I do not listen to my local NPR affiliate much; it has too much classical music, and I may be weird but classical music makes me really tense. I don't know if they carry the Tavis Smiley show either; if not, I will check out the web site and his books. Just from the titles, the books sound very intriguing!

I do know the Boondocks and think it's sad that the Cinncinnati Enquirer felt it was necessary to censor it. Like you said: :wtf:

Questions of The Day

1. Favorite Chinese Food Take Out?
A local restaurant here has "House Special Fried Rice" with shrimp, pork, peas, and other goodies -- I get that a lot. Anything with broccoli and/or snow peas is also a favorite.

2. If a movie were made about your life, what would the theme song be?
Well, the first movie would have a Talking Heads soundtrack and the sequel would be all Yo La Tengo soundtrack. (Do I have a big ego or what?)

3. We see many signs each day that say No Smoking, No Trespassing, No Pets, etc. If you could put an original "No _____" sign on your front door, what would it say?

How about "NO NEGATIVITY" -- does that contradict itself? Well... yeah. Oh well, have a good week Mina!

60. Welcome to Mondays IN The UGRR eileen_d. Let me get the red carpet out.

Take your walk and wave to the cameras, this is your moment :hi:

Thanks so much for dropping in to check us out. We meet every Monday and honestly, we really have a great time. Chilling out, interacting with each other and, of course, the questions. You are now one of the UGRR "bunch" as we like to call ourselves. Welcome!

Also, you can check out Tavistalks.com and stream the audio on your computer. He's a dynamic speaker and he speaks TRUTH!
Now, let me check out the responses to the questions.

Your favorite Chinese take-out is House Special Fried Rice with shrimp, pork, peas and etc. I also like the broccoli dishes because they conform with my diet.

Your theme song, about your life would feature the "Talking Head's" soundtrack but wait! The sequel, Yo La Tengo soundtrack as the music for the sequel. No, I think you believe in yourself and you know what you want out of life! Knowing who you are and what you believe in is a very good think, IMO.

And your "NO" sign would read?

NO NEGATIVITY

Sounds excellent to me :).

Once again, thanks for checking out Mondays IN The UGRR and I shall look forward to your visits again.

Best wishes,

Undergroundrailroad Mina

49. Class Action Suit?
I think the Boondocks Kids should get in touch with Ronald Anne from Bloom County, and Franklin from Peanuts; I think they have grounds, don't you?

Glad to hear from you, Ms. M. You make Mondays just so much...better.

55. That stinks about the Boondocks
I'm glad I'm not in Cincinatti. Our paper still carries it, and it is one of my favorites.

1. Orange chicken or sweet-and-sour chicken

2. Theme song? Right now, the Beatles song that goes "I'm sooo tired.." I don't know what it's called, though. I haven't had a good night's sleep since the baby was born.

3. No Tantrums. But, that is wishful thinking on my part.

63. Hello Pithlet! How are you? Thanks for stopping in to say hello!
Congratulations to you and Mr. Pithlet on the arrival of your Baby. I don't think I 've had an opportunity to congratulate you !

That does stink about the Boondocks!

Now, I see you like Orange Chicken. That is on my top 10 list of Chinese Take out. I like sweet-and-sour chicken with shrimp friend rice.

LOL, I know just what you mean about feeding the baby in the middle of the night. You need sleep as well.

Thanks Pithlet for dropping in to say hello. It's really good to hear from one of my colleagues.

Love to you, hubby and baby :)

64. G'day, Mina/UGRR
Sorry, I'm late, had a busy day yesterday. Didn't go online much at all. :hi:

I'm not surprised about The Boondocks being dropped. Comfortable ignorance is always easier than uncomfortable learning (apologies to Aesop).

Now for your questions:

1) That's a good one, since the choices are so many. I like Ma Po tofu, shrimp in garlic sauce, and sauteed green beans.

2) I already have a soundtrack, and the first song is I am Somebody by Glenn Jones.

3) The sign on my front door would say No Slackers!

Enjoy the week off and see you soon!

66. HI Lurking Argyle! I found this really cool sweater for you. Ta Da!

I had your sweater all ready and waiting for you. Did you receive any argyle sweaters/socks for the holidays?

Don't worry about the late posts. For the past months this thread is always around on Tuesdays.

Thanks for your comments about The Boondocks being dropped in the Cincinnati Enquirer. I do like your quote.

Now, let's see what you like in the way of Chinese food.

Yummy! Ma Po tofu, shrimp in garlic sauce and sauteed green beans. I have to request "lite" on the garlic. The problem is that some of these dishes don't work to the maximum when you omit certain ingredients. I love Chinese tofu dishes with shrimp and sauteed green beans.

The song that best describes your life is I am Somebody by Glenn Jones. What a great pick LA! That is just beautiful. You really are unique LA and yes you ARE "somebody", some very nice and I someone I look forward to seeing on Mondays/Tuesdays.

Finally, your "NO" sign would say:

NO SLACKERS

See you in two weeks

Love,

Mina :loveya:
