1. You can probably go longer

likely 5000-6000 miles between oil changes. I used to think the same thing when I had bought my first vehicle, Chevy S-10 Blazer. I never heard exactly where the 3000 mile standard came from.
But I do remember a consumer testing organization that ran comparisons on NY taxi cabs. Some were given oil changes at 3000 mile intervals and some at 6000 miles intervals. There was no difference seen in engine wear.

It also may depend on HOW you drive. If you do a great deal of stop/start you may wish to change the oil a little more frequently.

Oh yeah, remember GREASE! Especially on some of the major suspension/steering points. These can be crucial. Neglect a ball joint and it will definitely come back to haunt you. You did not mention the type of vehicle you drive. It may have sealed bearings and they cannot be greased manually or at all for that matter. They last longer than unsealed bearings. You just keep using them until they wear out then replace them.

Another good tip. If you every have the tires off, dab the lug bolts with Anti-Seize compound. This will prevent the lug bolt/nut from freezing up.

Lastly, anti-seize the spark plugs or replace them every year. Spark plugs can get frozen in the engine head and that is a major bitch to fix.

Got all that?

2. Drain out all the water, take in plenty of oil, grease up that back end,
get out on the highway and go at full speed for about ten miles. See how it feels.
