9. Wow. I can't believe anyone remembered.

I'm flattered. It has been one HELL of a Lenten season, but I am glad to say that it has ended well. Mr. Writer accepted a very good position with a large company about 40 miles south of us (not too bad of a commute). Along with an increase in pay came stock and bonuses. However he now needs to COMMUTE, so to the Honda dealership we went last Monday and purchased a Civic Hybrid that he loves. We drove it down to see his parents, where I now sit writing to all of you.

I completed an excellent online fiction writing class, and I am very excited to share some of my instructor's feedback with all of you. During the class we had two opportunities to turn in short stories. Here is what she wrote to me after I submitted my second:

"I just posted my review a bit ago, and had to tell you that this is one of the most fantastic story drafts I've read in a long time. I cried when I read it. Major emotional impact. Though I said quite a bit in my review toward the revision end of things, I'm still betting you could tweak this a little and get it published. Keep writing and I have a feeling you'll go far!"

I had goosebumps after I read this. I felt like I finally "arrived" as a writer, and now I have two short stories I'm shopping to journals and magazines. I'm taking an advanced class in a couple of weeks. I can't wait to keep improving.

I still haven't heard back regarding my PhD application! I'm now away from my mailbox, and with my luck, the answer probably now sits waiting for me back at home. Perhaps they're all on a hike?

The job must have been a huge relief - and new cars are always fun. I've been really interested in those Honda hybrids, except that my '96 Civic refuses to break down and let me buy a new one. (I rate that fact 3 :):):) and a :(.)

That's a pretty amazing review from an instructor. It may be different in English/Creative Writing (although I doubt it), but in my field we don't write comments like that unless we're seriously gob-smacked. Congratulations!

I'm sure the PhD acceptance is cooling its heels in the mailbox - enjoy the rest of the road trip, and then head home to compose your gracious acceptance...
