Do you name your vehicles? |
|
and if so, how do you pick the name?
My family certainly does. For years, I drove an old Ford Explorer, named Dora. Its one of those names that takes people a couple seconds to get. Dora the Explorer.
This was traded in for a Toyota Corolla, which was named "Crazy Joe", after my brother in law mentioned that it sounded like "Crazy Joe DeVola" from Seinfeld.

My high school girlfriend was trying to convince me that my car needed a name when the fuel line clogged and the engine came to a stop.
From that day on my car was named "shithead".

35. Mine was a '74 Maverick |
|
Of all the "shithead" cars built in 1974, the Vega and the Maverick take top honors.
I was behind a co-worker driving her Vega into work one morning and in the parking lot I asked her, "how many miles does your Vega get to the quart?" She replied "Quart? You mean gallon." I shot back with "No, I mean QUART OF OIL. I could barely see for the blue cloud coming out of the tailpipe."
Payback sucks though, a few years later I bought a '66 Corvair convertible. It leaked oil so bad my friends named it the "Chevy Valdez".

6. Absolutely. Our Honda Civic is named Charlotte, just because. |
|
Our Subaru Outback is named The Todd, after a character on Scrubs. He has a cargo net in the back that we call the "banana hammock". If you watch the show, you know why.
Our old Honda Accord was named Edmund, after a video game character Edmund Honda.

I've named the family car since I was old enough to form the words, and have continued to do so with my own vehicles. I pick the names the same way I pick pets' names - I just wait for the right one to "come to me." And it generally happens very fast. I also get a sense of whether the vehicle is "male" or "female" or "neither," if that makes any sense, and that's how I think of him/her/it. It likely means nothing at all, beyond a way of personalizing one's stuff, but if it makes life a little more pleasant, where's the harm? Some people name their computers, for instance (I don't).
My current vehicle's name is Starduster, or Duster for short. :)

28. ok, but don't blame me if it gets deleted |
|
as you probably know a 1969 Caprice is a BIG car. this particular car had a bad steering grommett at the time that made it handle a bit strangely. she tended to drift a bit
anyway, myself (the Lady bartender) and 4 of the gals who ran cocktails in the club were going someplace (damned if I remember why we were all together in the car, but we were) and we were all a bit tipsy
OK a LOT tipsy
and I'm driving and commented that the damned car handled like a big boat
and one of the gals in the back said..........
"Yeah and with all these &^$#^& (a term that refers to a woman's external reproductive organ)in here, it smells like a tuna boat"
and there you go, it was called the Tuna Boat for as long as I had it after that

My present vehicle is a funny looking little thing (Chevy Aveo hatchback) named Pugster.
I previously had a Mazda named Max (short for Maxine - it was female).
Prior to that, I had an '85 VW Golf named Jezebel.
And before that, it was a Nissan Maxima whose name I've forgotten (edited to say Patrick! It's name was Patrick) but the onboard voice who said, "Left door is open", "right door is open" was named Shirley.
And my first car was a Honda CVCC named Ralph.

:P My sister and I got a secondhand car from our great aunt who decided when she was in her 90s that she couldn't drive any more. It was a 1973 Plymouth Fury III, and it was metallic pea green with a dark green vinyl top. We got it in 1983, when I was a junior in college (sis was a sophomore). I called it the Metallic Pea, which is from National Lampoon's Vacation. :P

Because one cold night, it sounded just like the Millennium Falcon did when Solo tried to get her started on Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back. (I just knew Solo was flying a Chrysler product. That winter night confirmed my suspicions.)
My car was an ugly beige color, and Lucas is known for his massive legal team, so we had to change the name a bit.
