Critics aim to ward off toxic waste shipments

Tanker trucks laden with 4,000 gallons each of a treated but still corrosive liquefied chemical weapon would follow a 900-mile path from Indiana to Port Arthur for incineration.

Those trucks would trace an interstate path from Newport, Ind., where the U.S. Army stockpiled the VX nerve agent chemical weapon for the past three decades, through Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana and into Southeast Texas.

The trucks would pull up to the Veolia Environmental Services industrial incinerator on Texas 73, near Port Arthur's El Vista neighborhood, for offloading of the liquid and its eventual destruction in a 1,600-degree Fahrenheit incinerator.

An organization called the Chemical Weapons Working Group, representing about 200 citizen activist groups nationwide, wants to stop this before it happens.
