What's a non-bigot word for "welsh" when used as a verb?
The term is typically used to indicate when someone has failed to keep his or her end of a deal or failed to pay a wager.

I'm hoping to find a single word as a synonym and not a two-word colloquialism that ends in a preposition like "back-out" or something.

4. Welsh or welch is derived from the Welsh...
...who were characterized by their English conquerors as dishonorable. Same way that "I've been gyped" is a reference to gypsies and "Indian giver" is derived, obviously, from American Indians.

12. Maybe renege.
Weasel is a bit colloquial. It is for a legal argument. I want to say someone backed-out of his end of a deal, but I'm hoping the word has a component of moral indignation to it. I'm using "repudiate" for my rough draft.

17. In our family, instead of the term
'jewed' him down, we say 'Roman Catholic'd him down'.

No, really, we do. And, we're Roman Catholic.

8. It's all in which case you use.
welsh - to break one's word. ( verb)

Welsh - natives and inhabitants of Wales.( noun)

http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/welsh

However, it does state that 'welsh' is " sometimes offensive".

One synonym for 'welsh' is 'renege'.

Renege is the word you are looking for. Look no further. It truly means what you mean.
