Bye-bye, chickie. (She's in a better place now.)
No, the chicken didn't die; we let her retire to the farm we bought her from...took her up there yesterday.

That guy who runs the farm doesn't sell or kill his chickens after they're done laying eggs; he just lets them hang out in the general population until old age gets them.

We'd had her pen in the screen porch for the winter, and decided that we couldn't move her outside again because the fox who attacked her last fall is still around. So we took her back to the farm, and she's nice and happy and warm and dry in the middle of the crowd of other Rhode Island Reds.

The Little Guy understood and took it well, and he'll get to visit her now and again anyway.

2. But we did a good job of painting eyes, a nose, and a mouth on it, didn't we?

5. Great pic
We had a small flock of backyard chickens for eggs. Last spring predators got in and killed every one of them. They were in a fenced in coop that had a cover over it, and they roosted in an enclosed shed which we had installed doors on for added protection. The predator dug under the fence and squeezed through the doors.

It was a totally traumatizing experience for me. They were more than a healthy food source. For us, they were our pets.

14. We're real suckers for animals. This chicken lived The Life for 4 years with us, and
we could not let her end up inside a fox.

10. My dear Redstone...
A very good, and smart move on your part...

I'm sure she will be happy there for the rest of her life...

Especially since the fox is still around!

19. Yes, she ooked to be about as happy as a chicken can look when she went into the house
with the other 50 or so chickens.

That farmer is a great guy, and really likes his birds.

13. Oh, yeah, it's pretty miserable right now; 35 degrees and raining, with high winds...
perfect for making my old bones ache. But we're inside in the couch with the puppy, so we're warm.

Any progress on the dome house?

16. promises and hope
I've not given up yet, if it happens, it will be well worth the wait, at least I keep telling myself that. ;)

It is weird here weather wise, it's in the 30's tonight here, upper 30's but it's the middle of April for pete's sake.

Stay warm and rest those bones, take good care.

17. OMG! You had a chicken? The many layers of Redstone. You never cease to amaze.
Did she lay good eggs?

(And...foxes are skulky ishy critters. I have a couple of foxes living in my forest. I respect them...but they creep me out. And...they kill all the bunnies that live amongst my trees.)

18. Oh yes, wonderful eggs until about a year ago. And she's a cool chicken; she would actually
sit on our son's lap while he was swinging on his swingset, come when you called her (I used to let her loose to peck around the yard while I read the newspaper in the morning; when I was ready to go inside I would walk over to her pen and call her, and she'd trot right over), put up with having Mrs R give her a bath (see below), and do all manner of other un-chickenish things.

Just part of this never-boring life, chez Redstone.

Charming chicken, handsome son you have there! It was most kind of you to relieve Chickie of her unsafe living situation. I was wondering, how did the puppy get along with her?
