the world's best cat litter...
....has been discontinued. And I am SO BUMMED!

Arm & Hammer's Super Clay. Discontinued!

I've been using it for years for my four (now three RIP Chester) cats, and just truly appreciated it for its high quality. No odor, filled up three litter boxes with one bag, etc.

They freaking discontinued it!

I whined, I pleaded. But it's gone.

Try the super scoop, they said. Ha.

A 14-pound box of their super scoop barely puts three inches in two litter boxes. It doesn't contain the smell as well. It's messy and wasteful as huge clumps have to be removed. And it costs twice as much.

And the worst of all --- it makes hard clumps between kitty's toes! My poor old calico has been trying to pull out the clumps; I finally had to help her.

Nothing I have ever tried worked as well as the discontinued product.

Damn.

1. I know how hard a transition like this is grasswire, but
try to keep an open mind. And tell your cats the same thing.
Just give it a try.
Arm and Hammer is by far the best brand, and the clumping litter
is great. I could kick myself for not switching sooner!
You might feel the same in retrospect.

Sometimes we're dragged, kicking and screaming, into the future.

3. kittens can die from eating scoopable litter
I've read that it gets stuck in their toes, they lick it, and it clumps inside their bodies better than in the box.

-Sad -- pass it on-
don't want people who don't know to lose their kitten.

4. I get the stuff...
made from old newspapers or pine shavings instead of clay. Several different brands, and some seem to do better than others with the smell. The cat loves the stuff. Not always available at supermarkets, KMart, etc., but found in pet stores. I've got a PetSmart handy, and get stuff there-- really cheap for just about everything. (30 pound bags are the way to go.)

PetSmart has their cheap house brand litter, Exquisicat, but even the odor prevention clay stuff stinks to high heaven, so I stopped using it. I picked up a bag of their house brand pine litter and will see if that does any better. I forget what I paid for it, but it didn't seem like much at the time.

I'm afraid of clumping litter-- I've heard too many tales of cats getting intestinal blockages from it, and although some of that may be urban legend I just see no reason to trust or use it.

26. The only thing I won't buy at Petsmart is cat litter
I use regular clay litter. Food Lion has it for $2/25 lb; the cheapest cat litter at Petsmart is almost twice that.

They just opened a Pet Supermarket in town. I may check there for cat litter. I did check for fish food; they don't have Hikari (my pleco says Hikari algae wafers are the best) and their Tetra is the same price as Petsmart, so the heck with 'em.

7. No, it's not!
First off I keep my cats inside. I would appreciate it if you would keep your cats from using MY yard as their litterbox.

Secondly, while your cats are outside they are also disturbing the birds in my yard who congregate at the feeder. I know for a fact that some of the birds have been killed by cats.

Third, some people, like my father, don't give a tinkers damn if the cat is a stray or if it is yours. It steps into his yard he will shoot it. (Believe me, I've tried to talk him out of it.)

It's dangerous and irresponsible to allow cats outdoors without supervision.

9. Sorry, DS...
Our neighbors believe it's OK to allow their cats to run around unsupervised. They've used our yard as a litterbox and killed birds at our feeder. At least one of them was scraped off the street by city workers.

I don't know what it's like where you live but here it's a serious problem and no one seems to care. Our neighbors seem to think that cats are disposable. One gets killed or lost you just get another. My dad has trapped and killed cats that were in their yard despite my pleas to give them to the Humane Society where they can be either adopted or put down humanely.

So, if I seem a bit touchy on the subject of indoors vs outdoors I do apologize. I mean no disrespect towards you. If, however, you allow your cats outdoors unsupervised then I'm afraid we'll have to agree to disagree on this subject.

10. In your environment I can see that as annoying
I live right across the street from a sizeable chunk of woods, the cat grew up in upper NY State, on a farm, with a sizeable chunk of woods. He's adapted to them, every time I let him out that's exactly where he goes and where I see him coming back from (yes, he's bright enough to not cross the street when there's car on it, but we get an amazingly small amount of traffic anyway). He's half-wild, keeping him indoors would make his life a living hell.

and cruel humans who torture animals or let fertile animals reproduce.

I've done a lot of volunteer work dealing with the consequences of the third of these factors.

The average life of an indoor pet is much longer than that of outdoor pets.

So for most of us in cities, I agree with you Will.

21. I agree Will -- PLEASE KEEP THEM INDOORS
My wife and I lost our first cat to a neighbor's dog. We adopted her from some friends of friends, where she had lived outdoors in a rural setting. Of course, we lived in a city and tried to keep her indoors, but she had to go out every once in a while. She was a little afraid of people (because she was neglected in her previous house) and was old when we got her (10 years), but she warmed up to us and became a little sweetheart. We loved (and still love) her dearly.

Then, one night after my wife let her out, a neighbors dog got free from its chain and killed our cat. The dog bit her across the back, crushing her spine, and probably killed her instantly. I rushed her to the emergency vet a mile away, but there was nothing they could do.

She was only outside for five minutes, tops, but it was still enough time for her to get killed. Ever since then, I've been telling everybody I know who owns cats to KEEP THEM INDOORS, because you could save their lives.

We now have two great cats, two males, who are hand-raised littermates, and are great company to have around. They are very affectionate and love to curl up with me and my wife. However, we still miss our first cat, and I still tear up when I think about her, and her rough life, and how she died. ;(

11. Go for Feline Pine, if you can find it....

It's a little expensive, but it's completely odorless, except for a natural pine sawdust smell (not perfume). You never smell the cat stuff, and you don't have to use a lot of it.

Edited on Wed Jan-14-04 04:47 PM by Misinformed01
there is a "fake" feline pine....it's kind of generic, but you can get 20 pounds for about $6. I cannot tell the difference at all...looks and smells exactly the same, and apparently Stinky the Wonder Cat likes it-

On edit:

Exquisicat Pine Litter

...no brand loyalty here (especially for cat litter), and I cringe everytime I pay for FelinePine, as much as we like it.

Thanx for the tip, misinformed01!

24. We swar by pine (no-name brand) kitty litter!
It really is odourless, and conceals the smells and the cat business, too.

I find the non-name stuff is cheaper. We get ours at Petcetera--not sure if Petcetera is in the US, though.

If you can find it, you could also try "Yesterday's News", which is litter made from old newspapers. It's good, too, but is a little more expensice than pine.

12. any clumping litter will do but get an automated litter box
I got one a year ago and I love the thing, no smell and I only empty it once a week, I have three cats (two belong to my GF and have temporary residence) and they prefer that to the two regular boxes I have out.

cat litter if you don't like the other brands.

Arm & Hammer deodorizer (a powder you can sprinkle onto litter) works well.

I have 2 of the LitterMaids because with one I was having to empty it every 2-3 days (with 3 cats). But even with two, it is far less work than traditional litter boxes and so much nicer for the kitties.

27. Anyone here use crystal-form litter?
The top brand is Fresh Step Crystals, I think, but I think the brand I'm using is Petgold...

Anyway, I've been pretty satisfied with it--2 cats in an extremely small apartment and odor is pretty much nonexistent.
