1. I love that song
I love Richard Thompson.

Actually Del Mccoury does a very good bluegrass version too.

2. And he pulled her on behind
and down to Boxhill they did ride.

Oh says James to Red Molly "Here's a ring for your right hand
But I'll tell you in earnest I'm a dangerous man.
For I've fought with the law since I was seventeen,
I robbed many a man to get my Vincent machine.
Now I'm 21 years, I might make 22
And I don't mind dying, but for the love of you.
And if fate should break my stride
Then I'll give you my Vincent to ride"

Excellent song! Superb song writer! :hi:

4. Rap is dangerous but, Oh, those sexy Celts!
Come on, the song is about Yet Another Sexy Thug.

Then there's "Beeswing", a song about a woman who breaks Richard's heart. But she gets hers -- she becomes an alcoholic who loses her looks.

All you have to do to be able to write a hateful song is to Celtify it -- either through Ireland, Scotland, or C&W ("I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die"). You couldn't do better for misogyny and violence if you wrote a song called "Smack My Bitch Up".

And I once did have a red-haired girlfriend who liked leather jackets. It gets old after a while.

:P

9. I love Rumor and Sigh.
My favorite songs on it are "Read about Love" and "Keep Your Distance." The latter has especially good remake potential; I could envision a country remake of that (Emmylou, Nanci, Mary, that's your cue).

http://www.richardthompson-music.com/album.asp?id=24

And of course "Mother Knows Best" is a parting kick at Maggie Thatcher.

Then there's "Don't Sit on My Jimmy Shands."

When the party hit full swing
I saw you come reeling in
You had that six-pack in a stranglehold
Now you stagger, now you sway
Why don't you fall the other way
'Cause I've got something here worth more than gold

I said "Don't sit on my Jimmy Shands
Don't sit on my Jimmy Shands
They don't mend with sticky tape and glue
Don't sit on my Jimmy Shands
Don't sit on my Jimmy Shands
And that's my very best advice to you"

Call me precious, I don't mind
78s are hard to find
You just can't get the shellac since the war
This one's the Beltona brand
Finest label in the land
They don't make them like that anymore.
