Real Media alternatives?
I've gotten a bunch of .rm files that I want to watch, but I refuse to have RealPlayer on my system. Any alternative players out there that can handle Real Media files?

3. I have only used Xine (Linux)
and that needs a real-player installed to work. The players I know can only play audio realmedia files.

This looks as if it might be what you're looking for (I can't vouch for it)

4. sigh
That one requires RM to be installed. Weird. If I already have real media and quicktime and wmp, why do I need this program to play them? Just strange.

5. you don't need it

It's just convenient to use the same player for everything.
AFAIR Real has released the source for the codec - a working free player is just a matter of time now.

6. great
Thanks. I'll keep my eyes open. Real is just too damned invasive to have on my system.

7. Somebody on an "I hate Real Networks" site claimed as of 3/03
that Oracle was going to make a product that plays rm files, but if you go to Oracle's site and search Real Networks (or media, I forget which I searched), you get a RealMedia seminar on the wonders of Oracle and Real Networks, plus a popup telling you that you need the latest Real Player. Whiiiiiiich undercuts the claim that Oracle is producing such a product.
Will keep looking.

Lemme know if this works. Guestbook indicated that some people had trouble with it; most loved it.
There's also a graphical user interface for it here:

11. well, poo
Downloaded it, it was missing a .dll. I'll try again tomorrow, it's late.

And the gui requires you to have realplayer on your system. If I had realplayer, I wouldn't need to convert the files, now, would I?

9. Real Media has frozen my system since it has been installed
I have to quit AOL when a Real Media file is clicked...I attempted to uninstall Real Media and it froze my system...I had to delet just the program file without the .dll files that are splayed throughout the system....I HATE Real Media!

10. Evil, aren't they?
I eventually went through the registry and deleted every reference to them, which is NOT recommended, but it was really fun. There are assorted sites dedicated to helping guide you through deleting Real Player/One/Whatever from your system. It feels goooood.
