Boy Playing With Rifle Shoots His Eye Out
<snip>

An east Nashville teen was accidentally shot in the eye this afternoon while playing with a loaded rifle, police said.

The 16-year-old boy was transported to a Nashville hospital following the shooting, which occurred in a home on the 800 block of Fatherland Street at about 1 p.m. today, Metro Police Capt. Rich Foley said.

Foley said the 16-year-old and a 15-year-old were apparently playing with a .22-caliber rifle when the gun went off.

The boy who was shot remained in the hospital Saturday, but he is expected to live. Foley said it was “rather miraculous” that his injuries were not life-threatening, since he was shot in the eye at close range.

As of Saturday afternoon, no charges had been filed in connection with the shooting, though detectives were still investigating, Foley said.

Police have not released the identity of either boy involved in the accident. It was unclear Saturday afternoon whether there were adults inside the home when the gun went off.

5. I was lucky to have a dad who taught me that firearms are not toys
And the basic rules of safe gun handling.

All guns are loaded at all times
Never point a gun at anything you do not intend to destroy
Keep your finger off the trigger until you are preparing to fire
Always be sure of your target, and what's around and behind it

7. If you're going to store a loaded rifle, LOCK IT
Or, better yet, don't store a rifle when it is loaded.

Or, better yet, actually teach your children to handle guns with extreme caution and stress that they are dangerous if you fuck around with them.

Nah, that's too much work and unamerican and et cetera and BUSH BUSH BUSH.

9. We have guns in my house...
They are all locked up. We go hunting on occasion. We never keep any ammo here.

Fuck, keeping a loaded gun around. That is nuts.

10. You know, if the eye had had a gun with which to shoot back, or
if the boy even THOUGHT the eye might be armed and prepared to defend itself, this probably wouldn't have happened.

Every eye should have a gun!
