2. Oh boy, did you hit the nail on the head!
My sophomore year was the last year my original high school existed. In the summer between my sophomore and junior years, they tore it down and built a new one. I was part of a group giving tours to the community. Every single person on my tour said the new one looked like a prison.

The old school was so cool. The Administration offices were on a second floor (the only second floor in the place). There was a dual staircase going up to the the offices. Sophomores were required to walk up one staircase, and down the other in that area of the main hallway. None of us thought of it as punishment, but just as a rite of passage. When they tore the school down, it broke my heart.

The only thing they kept was the band/choral building, which needless to say, was my favorite part of the "new" school.

Sometimes, "newer" isn't necessarily "better".

3. My high school was a stately old building....
that was originally a "country day school." It had a huge front lawn and even a bell tower.

I would have been miserable in a modern building with small windows, especially since I spent so much time staring out of them... :+

4. My high school was "open concept" and the classrooms weren't walled in
It was a weird social experiment that was just ending when I started high school. The classrooms had no walls. There was a commons area where students could hang out during class because class attendence was optional. There was a smoking area for students, can you believe it? All very different now.

The hot lunch program provider for my kids' schools is a prison contractor.

5. I went to a glorious 1950's gem of a school
Edited on Wed Apr-25-07 05:36 AM by SoCalDem
wide staircases..full sized lockers.. a HUGE theatre arts pavillion (we could FLY scenery)..

a HUGE cafeteria, that local business people CHOSE to eat at, because of the homemade food..

It was fantastic.. I pity the kids now with their "open" classrooms & lousy designs..

The grounds of our school were used a picnic ares on the weekends, because local people could use our tennis courts & track.

7. I graduated from a school that was consolidated with 2 others
my Senior year. (That was fun, :sarcasm: not knowing 2/3 of your class.) When we all saw it for the first time we decided that all it needed was spotlights on the corners and guards with rifles and the thing would be complete. It is very prison-looking.

Now, the school I went to from K thru Junior year: a wonderful old building that they have since torn down. A pity.
