20. Play the piano again.
Devastating injury to the right hand at age 12, 6 years of training shot to hell.

Took me almost 2 years to learn how to WRITE again. Never got enough dexterity back to pick up piano again.

Shit.

37. Ocelot, I have one of her CDs and it's amazing!
Edited on Sat Apr-28-07 01:08 AM by Radio_Lady
Picked it up at a thrift store for $2.99.

I've been playing it this evening.

Is she still actively singing? What a magnificent voice!

I wish I were able to sing well enough just to a church choir -- singing alto, of course.

Thanks for your post.

40. Kiri rocks.
See if you can find her performance of Richard Strauss' "Four Last Songs" -- awesome. If you've ever seen the movie "The Year of Living Dangerously," one of them is on the soundtrack. Just beautiful. I don't know if she's still singing; some of this stuff came out in the early '80s.

I can sing well enough for a church choir, which makes it all the more depressing that I can't sing like Kiri.

42. Ocelot, my favorite story: I have an amateur voice, but I don't mind showing off a bit.
I would do more karaoke if my husband were interested, but he isn't.

In 1993, when my daughter Linda got married, I decided to hire a vocal coach to teach me to sing the song "Linda" from the 1940s. Found the sheet music and put some time into learning it. It's just a little ditty that a fellow named Buddy Clark used to sing. I sang it as a lullaby for her when she was a baby. She always thought I had made the song up!

Anyway, the wedding was a difficult one for us. Two of my stepdaughters were in the wedding party but not talking to their father, my husband. My ex-husband was there with his wife, whom he married two weeks after we divorced -- April 1971 -- and my son came with his girlfriend and wasn't talking to his father. It was not a great situation, so I busied myself trying to sing in the hotel shower the morning of the wedding.

We get to the reception and I have no rehearsal with the small band. Never you mind, I got up to sing "Linda" and held the microphone tightly in my sweaty little hand. It wasn't a great performance because I couldn't find a comfortable key to sing in and had to start over again a couple of times. I wasn't too proud of the performance -- and it was very amateurish and was recorded on videotape for all to see and hear after the event.

The next person to sing was my ex-husband's wife. She took the microphone, and belted out her song -- not sure of the title now -- in a pure and beautiful operatic voice! PS. She also plays the piano and cooks well -- in another life, she might have been my friend because she is so talented.

Now my ex-husband is gone, died from lung cancer complications last December 2006. Her birthday was last week. My daughter keeps in touch with her and I think about her often. The ending was very sad for this talented lady.

46. That's quite a story -- what a "complicated" wedding...
and I bet your daughter totally appreciated your solo because it was special for her, even if it wasn't as "professional" as the ex's wife's performance.

61. Talent is a little like money. You will always find people who are better off than you,
Edited on Sun Apr-29-07 08:45 AM by Radio_Lady
and some who are worse off. For example, my husband can barely sing "Jingle Bells" or "Silent Night." Of course, he claims he never sang them because we are Jewish... but c'mon... he knows he's just on the edge of being "musically challenged". We do go to many classical and Broadway musical events and he does seem to enjoy them.

At least I have the ability to appreciate music and sing well enough to stay with the melody. Earlier in my life, I even thought about training to become a symphony conductor! I had a big crush on Leonard Bernstein and watched and listened to him frequently... (didn't know he was a bisexual). But my musical aptitudes are simply not advanced enough. Piano training was terribly difficult for me, although I do think that I might have had better luck with a wind instrument, possibly the clarinet.

My father played the violin -- perhaps "attacked" would be a better word... Although he was quite an amateur, he took lessons for years, and he played on and on whenever he wanted to, whether the "audience" enjoyed it or not!

Mother played the piano when I was younger, but the only piece I remember is the sweet little melody "Fuhr Elise" (Sister Elise) by Beethoven. I hear that melody quite frequently and always think of her.

But it's tempting.
