Most charming, endearing scene in a book or movie
In "Throw Momma From the Train," Danny DeVito shows Billy Crystal his coin collection. Billy's character and the audience expect to see an actual coin collection. But Danny gets his coins out and begins, "here's a nickel I got in change when my daddy took me to the fair" and so on. Very sweet.

Yours?

1. in the "prize winner of defiance, ohio"
when the mom and the daughter share an especially touching moment where mom encourages and consoles her daughter and they both hug and say "i love you."

2. In "The Cooler", when William H. Macy's luck changes,
and there's a little musical montage of scenes to the song "Almost Like Being in Love". It was both tender and cool in a very old-school Vegas way.

3. Here are a couple.
In Enchanted April, Lottie (Josie Lawrence) and Rose (Miranda Richardson) arrive on a rainy night at the Italian villa they've rented for a spring holiday, having just left grey, rainy, dreary London. They're having second thoughts about the whole adventure. The next day Lottie gets up and opens her shutters to a blissful, serene Italian springtime, and she sees Rose, still in her nightclothes, is already up and quietly enjoying the villa's beautiful garden.

In Hobson's Choice, Willy (John Mills) weds the ambitious, no-nonsense Maggie (Brenda de Banzie) in what is almost an arranged marriage (arranged by Maggie, that is!). The morning after their wedding night, he comes into the kitchen as she is starting the fire, getting the breakfast ready, etc., and he looks at her with a gaze that can only be described as a combination of tenderness, gratitude, and awe. He can't even speak but does interrupt her in the midst of her chores with a surprisingly affectionate kiss. It's a wonderful moment.

4. In "A Walk To Remember" when the guy gives Mandy Moore's
character a stick on tattoo and does all these other sweet things for her.

Wow, I can't believe I admitted that. I need to go kick John Stewart's dog with McCain now just to make up for it.

6. Hmm

I think maybe I'll go with the bit in Pride & Prejudice when Elizabeth gets the letter about her youngest sister going off with Wickham and Darcy is all concerned about her.

In movies - off the top of my head I'm going to go with the end of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Or maybe I'll just go with the whole movie. Seriously, you should see it if you haven't. Edited because if I'm going to recommend it I should probably not spoil the ending.

7. In the book "Correlli's Mandolin"
Edited on Sun Apr-29-07 12:32 PM by bif
When Correlli first meets the professor's daughter. It's so touching I think I puddled up when I first read it. I refuse to see the movie because the book was so damn good.

11. In "The Sound of Music" -- Maria teaching the children about the music scale.
Or the scene in the gazebo.

Or the whole movie with Christopher Plummer as a young man. Be still my heart!
