Favorite T.V. show of all time... |
|
Edited on Tue May-08-07 09:07 AM by Joe Fields
I know that most of you are younger than I am, so you may not know this one, though it shows up on cable from time to time, but I'd have to say my favorite show was The Wild Wild West. I used to think Robert Conrad's character was just about the coolest person on the planet. Dangerously handsome, suave, sophisticated, and and knew how to handle himself when needed, in a fight. Plus, every week he saved the world from a diabolical megolomaniac, usually Dr. Miguelito Loveless.
A close second would have been The Fugitive, starring David Janssen. Every week, this man, wrongly accused and convicted of killing his wife, was on the run, looking for the elusive "one armed man," who he thought was his wife's real killer. The show was very well written and had a lot of now famous actors in guest starring roles.

31. A distant family relation .... |
|
grew up in that Baltimore drug scene, made it out without dying, and is now a drug counselor. He said it was completely authentic. He was telling me this at a family picnic on Federal Hill in the Inner Harbor of Baltimore.
Then he pulled me over about twenty feet and pointed at a new-ish condo tower.
"See that? That's where Stringer Bell lived!"
I'm not from Baltimore, but there are many local touches worked into the show, I've been told.

actually used to be one of the biggest drug kingpens in the city of Baltimore. His name escapes me right now, I'm sure it is on the website.
I know Felicia "Snoop" Pearson is basically playing herself.
Some of the best acting and writing ever on tv.

who was the inspiration for Avon Barksdale.
Also, the real Jay Landsman plays Lt. Mello, while Delaney Williams plays Landsman.

Really a masterpiece.
One of the few things ever where I will watch the episodes twice to pick up all the layers of detail in the script.
I was surprised that Wood Harris, who played Avon, is the brother of the actor Steve Harris, who was in "The Practice" back before it morphed into "Boston Legal" with a different cast and show.

the first season was quite complex and intricate, and every season since then they've just continued adding layers and characters, etc. It's just incredible how they keep building. Great show. I dropped HBO shortly before the lsat season started, but I can't wait for it to come out on DVD.

It's a Canadian crime drama which doesn't have ridiculous CSI-style glitz and doesn't wrap up 95%-100% of its episodes in a neat little bow. You can see it on WGN.

I have the soundtrack - LOVED the music
I was pregnant the same time that Gary and his wife were having their baby on the show. I remembered cracking up because she had a cassette recorder in the labor room playing Pocobelle's Canon in D, and said if she heard it one more time she was going to kill someone. I had made a tape just like that and Pocobelle was on there.

I missed that the first time around, when it was on... um... Showtime? HBO? One of those channels. I had no interest in it, and then I was watching the New Year's Twilight Zone marathon on Sci-Fi, saw a commercial for Dead Like Me, and thought, "Hey, that looks like something I would like. I think I'll try it." So I watched an episode and I immediately loved it. Unfortunately, I only got to see about a dozen or so episodes before Sci-Fi cancelled it. I need the DVDs. Also, Callum Blue (Mason) is my number one actor crush.

I love wacko stuff. Conventional comedy simply isn't funny. I can't imagine watching a current traditional sitcom.
Others would be:
The Fugitive The Simpsons King of the Hill Star Trek Green Acres Beverly Hillbillies Laugh In Twilight Zone Lost in Space
Also I'll throw in Hawaii Five-O. In my trip to Hawaii the past few weeks I made special trips to check out the Hawaii 5-O sites, like the Iolani Palace and Punchbowl Cemetery, and the Temple on the windward side of Oahu that was featured in so many episodes.
Regarding Wild Wild West, I was surprised recently when I read it was canceled due to being too violent. My dad knew the guy who was the midget actor. They went to school at the University of Miami at the same time in the '50s. I think his name was Dunn, but I'm not sure of that.

looks like one of those old fold-up Polaroid cameras and the communicator looks like a old Remington razor. They had a fight seen with Kirk and an old school rival, their punches didn't come within a foot of looking real. The bridge of the Enterprise looks ridiculous now adays with all the cheesy lights and things. Still like the show and Kirk's overacting.

I think of it every time I eat peel and eat shrimp, because there was an episode where Lowell had his head caught in a fence or something, and Faye was talking with him on the walkie-talkie to keep him company or something, but she was telling him her recipe for shrimp cocktail (or some shrimp concoction).
Faye: Two pounds of shrimp, shelled and deveined.
Lowell: Yeah, who is Sheldon Devayne, anyway?

where Faye was trying to convince some of her older girlfriends that she could get a younger boyfriend, so she used Lowell. But she kept quizzing him about how they supposedly met, etc.
His big answer was "Lollapalooza II."
Or the crazy friend of Helen's who trapped Joe in the basement to relive her prom and kept calling him "Joey Bear" but she'd always act normal around everybody else, and he could never convince anyone she was nuts.

64. I liked the way that show went to commercial |
|
with the action freezing, so that at the end of the show you had a collage of the four or five "freeze frames" from the show ... that is the show I'm thinking of, right? It was on before I was born, but I remember watching reruns when I was a kid ...

As far as comedies go, The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin or Corner Gas.
And for dramas, Naked City.

95. RW Jerry Doyle in that series. |
|
After the show, he campaigned to take Brad Sherman's congressional seat in California (after John McCain endorsed him), lost, and is now a RW talkshow host in Vegas.

I missed the Ranger series which ran for several episodes after the final B-5 episode. I hope it's on DVD.
Brilliant show.

I went to a Writer's Guild Symposium that featured John Wells (who was a writer for China Beach) and he was asked that question.
The problem is, actually, the music. They can't obtain the rights, or afford to pay for the rights, to all of the music that was used on the show.

the shows I watch the most now are The Young And The Restless and American Idol. Speaking of AI, LaKisha and Blake have been my favorites, but Jordin ruled last night! Her first song was even another moment like Katharine's "Somewhere Over The Rainbow." If Jordin's improving that much, I'd consider buying her CD for sure.
Past shows I still love are The Dukes Of Haggard and The Flintstones.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Northern Exposure (the ones before Joel left).
The Wonder Years will probably never make DVD at the rate they're going--they have problems with the music rights. :(

I'm looking back across the years and I can honestly say that Lost has brought me more entertainment than any show I have ever seen.
Also making my short list would be -- The Carol Burnett Show, both Bob Newharts, Frazier, Cheers, Mash, Star Trek(original), All in the Family, and The Sopranos.
