Imagine that there was a way to know what Natalie Portman was doing all the time. Would indulging in that be … weird? Would you do it anyway?
(Photo: Jeff Christensen/Associated Press)The actress with big roles in “Star Wars,” “Closer” and “Garden State” may be considering such a project, according to Valleywag.
The report is based on a sighting of her with a prominent Silicon Valley venture capitalist and a message posted to a Web site of one of his colleagues. That colleague later said she was joking, but that isn’t stopping other sites from speculating.
The big question: Why would a movie star want to give people the ability to stalk her? Isn’t one of the problems with celebrity the lack of privacy? A technology writer with Toronto’s Globe and Mail has one theory:
If you’re Brittany or Lindsay or Paris, you either spend all of your time trying to get on TV or in the newspaper, or you find yourself hounded by photographers and video-cameras trying to put you there anyway. Why not take control of the process?
The news blog on CNet said that she “isn’t alone in looking for new online outlets.” It cites a project that includes Will Smith and Jessica Alba, and Valleywag noted a deal that teamed Will Ferrell with a venture capital firm to build Funny or Die, a YouTube-style site for comedy.
As several unknown talents, including Lonelygirl15 and Justin.tv, rose to Web celebrities, they had nothing standing between them and their audiences. Ms. Portman still has the movie studios to go through.
Which brings us to another question: The studios need Natalie Portman (Jessica Biel would disagree), but does Natalie Portman need the studios?
