Right. Is walking 4 miles/day too much for a lad who, right now, walks 1 mile/day? |
|
I've walled off 2 hrs each day just to walk/jog to the grocer's and back. Not always to buy dead animals and plantlife, or even liquids extracted from said animals or plantlife... just to walk and have everybody looking at me as if I wuz some sort of terra'ist.

1. Walking 4 miles a day shouldn't be too much for anyone in reasonably good health. |

2. How about unreasonably mediocre health? |
|
Would that get me to being reasonably good health again? :D

5. four miles is probably around 7500 steps |
|
You should shoot for 10k steps. Get a pedometer and wear first thing in the morning. You'll be surprise how the steps add up.

11. They always tell you... |
|
...to see your doctor before starting any exercise program, but if you want to live dangerously, this is the way to do it. Anyone who can walk should be able to walk a little more, and someday I'll bet you'll begin to run it. Enjoy!

... I started 3 years ago with about 1.5 per day and am now at 4-5.
Can't sleep unless I do, and its also amazing mental therapy - allows me to decompress from my job(s) and carry on a conversation with myself about stupid shit that's clanking around between my ears.
:hi: You'll find it becomes the highlight of your day, soon enough!

17. no you'll be surprised at how easily you fall into the rhythm |
|
it's fun, enjoy, well, the jogging part is no good for the knees or for the looking around, but the walking is cool, bring a little camera or a little pair of binoculars, it's funny the things i see, all kinds of woodpeckers, mockingbirds fighting, hawks...main thing is i cannot hold very much (no upper body strength), when going to the grocer you need to think about how much you can realistically carry back and still enjoy the walk, if you really get a lot of heavy liquids then it's better to use the bike with a basket if there is at all a safe place to ride the bike along your streets

Yeah, it'd be for one or two items only... including drinking water...

80 age wise, and i walk two miles a day easily...started out with a half mile and increased
it gradually. Working on getting it up to four. Sleep and feel so much better.
Bet you'll notice the difference soon. Yes, definitely get a pedometer. Have fun.

22. Gradually working up to it is the best for most people. |
|
It's surprising how easy it is to add a little bit of distance each week. I love to walk and have about a half dozen different routes to walk to the closest town center, a round trip of about 4 miles. Of course, some of my helpful and friendly neighbors had to learn that I didn't need a ride.:D

If you walk 1 mile per day today, and then expect to instantly walk 4 miles tomorrow, then yes it may well be.
Having seen some of your other posts about your fitness goals, I applaud you but suggest you move a little more slowly towards what you want to achieve.

21. Go for it-- you can do it! |
|
Since last October, I went from walking 1-2 miles a day before bed to doing 3 miles a day on an elliptical machine, plus another 2-3 miles on a stationary bike. I've lost 25 lbs, 3" off my waist, and haven't felt better. In fact I'm in better shape at 38 than I was at 28.
The summer is great time to get started, too. I just make it part of my daily routine after work. On my way home I go straight to the gym for an hour and then carry on with the rest of my evening.
Start small, and work your way up. Do a couple miles one day (and take the back streets so you don't get hit by Jetta drivers). Pretty soon you'll be doing four miles a day.
Good luck :toast:

23. adding a 3 mile walk shouldn't do too much damage |
|
you are talking a "walk" here right? Adding a 3 mile jog/run is an entirely different thing all together.

This morning, walking was a bit difficult too. And it's to be 90 degrees out, so I will stay indoors with the A/C and elliptical trainer. It'll suffice.

24. I say increase gradually, though. |
|
If you suddenly start going farther or faster than you're used to, you have an excellent chance of injuring yourself -- knee, foot -- and then it's no exercise at all.
Go slooooooooow.

If you push too hard, then feel uncomfortable or sore, you might find excuses to do something else. try an extra mile. If that feels alright, then go for another. Build up that way.
After a while, you should also walk the distance on your hands to build up arm muscles.:D
