Sopranos??? Spoiler Alert. |
|
Edited on Mon May-14-07 03:02 AM by Syrinx
Why did Tony finish off Christaphuh?
Was it just because he had long viewed Chris as the family's weak link, saw his chance and took it? Or was there something more to it?
And what did you think of Tony exclaiming "I get it!," watching a beautiful desert sunset while tripping on peyote buttons? Did Tony understand the "meaning of life," only to forget it when the drug wears off? Or was there something more to it?
What do you think? I'm happy to invite speculation on where this is all going. But if somehow you KNOW what is going to happen (work in TV, or something), please don't spill your guts. ;)

6. I really need to buy the DVD's |
|
I only started watching this final season. Not these final nine, but the ones before that.
I'm catching up though thanks to the A&E reruns. (They get fairly wide latitude for a basic cable service, but some of those soundtrack substitutions can be amusing.)
I'm sorry I almost ruined your night! :hi:

4. Chris was high as a kite driving him and T back from the city |
|
Edited on Mon May-14-07 03:22 AM by Syrinx
They were listening to the soundtrack from The Departed. (Tony has it too, and loves it.) There was a Pink Floyd song by some other singer. (His voice sounded familiar.)
Chris was driving erratically, and another car comes winding around toward them. Christaphuh swerved, ran off the road, and flipped about a dozen times. Tony is okay but Chris is f'd up. He starts bleeding out of his mouth, and Tony put his hand over Chris' mouth and nose, and he suffocated quickly.

Remember the lighthouse from last season? It looked like the sun gave off a pulse like the lighthouse and Tony said, "I get it!" Maybe Tony won't return to NJ? Also I think it may have been a sunrise? They were up all night tripping right?

Well, that was interesting. I had heard back in the beginning of this season that Chrissie gets killed in a car wreck, but I've heard so many Sopranos "rumors" that I really didn't see it happening - story details are so closely guarded that these leaks seldom pan out. But it sure did this time - wow!
I think Chrissie would have died anyway, Tony just took the extra step to see that it happened. And it has to be a big relief for Tony - Chris had become too risky.
Tony's peyote trip was weird too, but apparently very meaningful to him. What did he mean when he shouted "I get it" at the rising sun?
What's interesting to me is what's going to happen now - I assumed that at least one of the big names would die, but now that Chris is gone, where do they go from here? It sure seems like AJ is headed for trouble, but killing or jailing him almost seems too predictable for David Chase.
Only three episodes left!

AJ seems like a punk ass kid, but he appears to have a conscience of some sort.
I know he laughed at the kid on crutches, but the beating they gave the kid in the street really shook him up.

opportunity for Tony to do what he's wanted to do for awhile---my money is still on Sylvio for being the rat though. I figured that all of them will get it in the end but having him killed off this way was a bit of a surprise.

15. We're seeing the emrgence of A.J. |
|
In some respects.
He's following the same path as Tony:
Gets into therapy.
Involved with the campus bookie operation.
Takes part in reprisal against bettor who doesn't pay up.
Registers at Rutgers (we'll see for how long).
He's depressed.
I think AJ is going to take Christopher's place by the end of the series.

16. I've watched this show since inception on HBO |
|
I thought Tony said 'I DID it!' At the end. (Let me rerun on the TiVO to check.)
Tony offed Christopher because he was a huge liability, between all the shit with Paulie and his continued drug use, not to mention Chrissy banging the real estate agent who Tony still lusts after. That really pissed T off. Plus Cleaver put some bad ideas in Tony's head re: the love-hate relationship between Christopher & himself, and the possiblity that Chrissy could flip.
Not sure what is going to happen, but it is getting more violent, I think they will off someone else next week.

19. I think Tony thinks that Christopher's death breaks his current run of bad luck. |
|
He had that little epiphany at the roulette table, and I think the "I get it!" was a reiteration of his thinking that he was now un-cursed. That seems to be supported by the previews for next week where they're talking about the "Sopranos curse."
What I'm waiting to see is if Tony is haunted by Christopher ala "Cleaver" (notice he threw away the Cleaver coffee mug after Chrissie died).

20. I just re-ran the end of the show, he did say 'I get it.' |
|
I agree, T thinks that by offing Chrissy his streak of bad luck has ended. He got the babe, he won at Roulette. Chrissy was a curse. Wasn't there some weird scene in the first few shows when he was hallucinating when he was in a coma, something about light? Same kind of theme.
Is this illegal asbestos dumping going to bring him down or is he going to off Phil Leotardo?

39. Is she the one Christopher met in L.A.? |
|
He picks up a girl when he and little Carmine travel to L.A to meet with Ben Kingsley. He falls off of the wagon and parties with a her for a few days until they get in a fight and Chris calls his sponsor to come straighten him out. Not sure though if this is the same girl or how Tony even knew about her.

I actually thought, before this episode, that it was going to end with Christopha turning, going off into the witness protection, and the rest of them off to federal prison. I was very surprised.
All bets are off as to how it will end. It does look like a New Jersey, New York showdown is looming.

24. Chrissie symbolized weakness to Tony |
|
These guys can be animals, and what the Mafia culture really doesn't tolerate is weakness, or perceived weakness. They really couldn't approve of his not drinking and partying; it was alien to their culture.
Tony is also edging into out-of-control himself. He is living on his outer limits, almost as if he has a death wish.
With Chris gone, it is the end of an era. What possible successor does Tony have? None of his soldiers have the brains to run that operation.
Possibilities: 1) Gang war with Leotardo. Possibly fatal to Tony. 2) AJ steps up to Chris's position by some dramatic service to Tony 3) Tony self-destructs through gambling and drugs.

34. He kept looking at the child seat, and I think that's what did it |
|
He saw that Christopher was putting his child in potential danger by being on drugs and driving. He mentions later what would have happened to the baby if she had been in the car. I think seeing that was the straw that broke the camel's back. He started to call 911, but closed his phone and suffocated Christopher instead. He then called 911 after he knew Christopher was dead.

There haven't been all that many times in the entire series where Tony is motivated to outright kill someone (at least himself), but when he does there's always something behind it (think Ralph and Pie-O-My, or even earlier in the series when those two idiots shot Chrissy).
He saw that child seat and I interpreted it as him protecting Chris's baby, especially since Chris had been going on about looking at his kid, etc. etc. right before the crash. That Tony brought it up (twice as I recall) during the remainder of the show is significant I think.
