9-11 talk is starting to grate on people, I witnessed booing and groaning
I went to a college commencement yesterday.

The Dean of the school brought up 9-11 and how it shaped these kid's world...(I could tell this guy was a bit of a r-winger)...and he blathered on and people started to boo and openly groan...and I could tell that it unnerved the jerk a bit and then he moved on to other topics...including how this particular university embraces globalism...

Beating on the 9-11 drum is just making people mad now...

...I view 9-11 as a historical event that did in fact change history but I think the inappropriate references to that event now get on people's nerves.

I can't bear to remember the images of 9-11. It breaks your heart. :(

It's become way too political...... (well, duh)

2. One of the most irritating phrases - "9/11 changed everything"
Used to justify so many things that are just wrong. I'm glad people are getting fed up with hearing it trotted out and starting to recognize how it's become a branded catch-phrase. Our generations's "Remember the Alamo." :eyes:

7. that phrase drives me crazy! 9/11 has been used as an
EXCUSE to change everything - demolish civil rights, torture people, etc. - but it didn't actually change a damn thing, except the skyline in NYC. It was a tragedy, a national event, but that's about it.

Now, you wanna know what did change everything? The Internet(s)...

3. RepubliCAN'Ts milked that event worse than Borden on a heavy sales month.
They're doing it STILL to this day.

What people are sick of is living in fear 24-7 and having the Cons shove that event down their throats on an almost continuous basis as their justification for telling them to do so.

4. Like this?
Howard J. Rubenstein, the spokesman for the Yankees' principal owner, George Steinbrenner, said the policy (of singing "God Bless America" at every Yankees home game and preventing people from leaving their seats while doing so) was an expression of patriotism.

"Mr. Steinbrenner wanted to do all games to remind the fans about how important it is to honor our nation, our service members, those that died on Sept. 11 and those fighting for our nation," Rubenstein said in a telephone interview.

(My emphasis.)

5. What a crazy view of patriotism
Forcing people to stay in their seats. "Now you stay right there and BE PATRIOTIC!" There's just so much wrong with that, I don't know where to start. :banghead:

13. I am sick and tired -
of others admonishing people like me because our troops are fighting for "our nation" and "our freedom."

"People are dying in Iraq for your right to say your stupid bullshit liberal crap!"

Uh, no. They are not. They are dying because of this administration's agenda. They are not protecting my freedom of speech at all.

15. They don't really know why people are dying in Iraq
And they don't want to know the truth because it might make them think, so they pull out the standard right-wing propaganda.

I always want to say to them, "Freedom to do what? The Iraqis took no freedom from us; neither did al Qaida. The only ones taking away freedom are the Wregime, and they're doing it in the name of freedom."

Of course, then they just tell you to go live in Iraq if you love it so much. :eyes:

8. OMG, the fake and oppressive patriotism after 911 was absolutely toxic
It was a fucking crime to utter the fact that "Iraq had NOTHING TO DO with 911!!!", thanks to the media that was in the right wing fanatic back pocket at the time.

Horrible days. And being right is no consolation for the atrocities this administration has set in motion for years, decades to come now.:(

10. you know what was sad...
this was a graduation for folks in the computer industry...software engineering..etc

He starts off talking about how fewer people were applying for admission...and he figured it was due to the fact that jobs are all going overseas to folks who would work for less....
but he said..."it looks like that may not be the case" ...but I think that is wishful thinking....capitalists always go where labor is cheap and plentiful...even skilled/educated labor...

14. Did he say why 'it looks like that may not be the case'?
So far, offshoring and people wanting a ROI on college education is why people are not taking courses or getting loans for them.

12. I just noticed that my appointment book has an American Flag watermarked on September 11
There are no other watermarks anywhere else in the book. None. I'm gonna toss it. I don't use it anyhow, except for when I need to remember when 9-11 is.
