I ran into the first BushBot I've ever encountered |
|
in Alberta. Well, I would have LOVED to have run into him, but my insurance would've went sky high, so I refrained.
He was in front of me - the back of his pickup truck had a red, blue and white ribbon with "god bless America" inscribed on it. His truck also had high wheels (I have no idea what the term is for that) - perhaps to be closer to that 'god'.:eyes:
Somehow, I don't think there was any sarcasm intended; "god bless america, because with Bush in office they need it".
First. time. ever. Bush is hated even in conservative Alberta (with very few exceptions).

thank goodness! Neo conservative politicans, businesspeople, and the odd idiot in a pickup truck.
Yep, I agree - the bigger or louder the truck, the smaller the penis. Overcompensation. ;)
I hope you are feeling well rested.

Suspensions and large tires as Republicans. What you've described here doesn't say it at all.
Now, if the sticker actually said "god bless america, because with Bush in office they need it," that would probably mean "pity/ think charitably of/ invoke divine intervention for the Americans, because they have an asshole/ monster/ idiot/ criminal running their government."

Alberta is the most conservative province in Canada.
Believe me, if someone has a "God Bless America" bumpersticker here, it isn't because they support the Dems...

Edmonton's fairly liberal - but the rest of the province is downright scary.

23. Alberta is the texas of Canada. |
|
They consistently vote for the most conservative parties (hell, they were the origin of the Reform party). Their great economy consists almost completely due to Oil. You fire an arrow into an Albertan crowd, and your likely to hit a wannabe cowboy oilman.
Not only that, but both Edmonton and Calgary are "car towns". You have to drive EVERYWHERE because their mass transport sucks, and they've made Urban sprawl a provincial pastime. Calgary is shock full of ugly ass McMansions. The only thing that redeems it is that its fairly clean and has great parks.
My biggest beef with Alberta is that they are starting to ruin a lot of the beautiful forests with development, and the tourism there made a once quiet, isolated area loud, noisy, and over-crowded.

They've been doing that for years...it's magnifying now with the boom, but everything has its price here - the environment, especially...
As for tourism, I started visiting Banff and Jasper in the mid 70's - sure it's gotten worse, but it was still very touristy then, too. Not unexpected with the increase in air travel.
I can't comment on Calgary (yes, the McMansions are gawd awful), but Edmonton has poor city planning. Twenty years ago, they were discussing bringing the LRT to the south side. They're just getting started now. How they missed getting the LRT to the largest shopping centre in the world is beyond me. :eyes:
Now they're building new subdivisions on some of the most fertile farmland in the province.
Edmonton is at least greener than Calgary, and much more liberal.

But know your getting MORE tourists in places where there were very few, like Kananaskis country. Not only that, but the boom has really cause too much development into areas that should be left alone. What do you expect? Every rich person wants a house in Banff or Canmore.
Edmonton is okay (my sis lives there), but it still bothers me. Too much building, not enough thinking. Cities should be properly planned, goddamit. My sis lives in St. Albert....I've never seen a more sterile area. I guess its for the richies and the faux-richies who don't want to live in Edmonton proper.

37. I'm definitely not defending the development |
|
I despise it; and when the oil is gone, it'll be pretty much a ghost town.
I have even more concerns about development in northern Alberta; Ft McMurray, and I even have to wonder about Grande Prairie, where the vacancy rate is almost 0. And if the tar sands expand...so much of that pristine boreal forest may be no more. :(
I agree about St Albert, and many of the new subdivisions in Edmonton. I live in an older area, thank goodness, where there is still some character left.
Edmonton's never been a 'pretty' city. One look at the skyline sets the tone for the rest of the place...
