Family Reunion Update...
Well, we made it through the weekend. We found out that we didn't have anything to worry about. The only country, backwards people were my mother's brother, and we are already used to that. You'd think this man had never stayed a hotel before as excited as he was about staying in a freaking Best Western that was substandard at best.
Apparently my grandfather's entire family was educated because he stayed home to work the farm. He was the oldest son. He sacrificed everything so his brothers and sisters and their children could get educated. I find that very noble, and I have a new found respect for this man that I only new for seven years before he passed away in 1986. Of course, his entire family, the well to do family with a name, freaked out when my grandfather married his deceased wife's parents maid in the mid 1930s. Of course, they had six children and were together fifty years. But of course that was not good enough for my uncle, one of the two products of his marriage to his first wife. We were together for two days, and he never once mentioned my grandmother. We didn't know anyone that he was talking about, including some guy from Tennessee who started Union college, teaching unions how to strike, I think his name is Peter Horton. I think they did a Frontline special about this guy or something, but he just completely decided to gloss over the woman who raised him from the age of seven.
God, I was so glad to get away from those idiots. I did however meet his daughter and her husband, who are fantastic, sweet people, and made new connections to my cousins, who I love to be around.
Wow. What a weekend. I'm so exhasted.
How was your weekend?
