CUJO is running around my neighborhood |
|
There is a very large, very smelly and unkempt St Bernard loose here. He's been around for a couple of days. I have no idea who owns him, if he is lost or whatever but it is clear that no one is caring for him at the moment.
Or if they are, they've had their nose amputated.
Please, Lord, do not let this dog carry off my GreenBoys. LOL

2. #1) Call animal control. Now. |
|
Not just for your sake, but for the dog's. The life of a stray is not a happy one, and if the dog does have an owner, perhaps this will remind him or her of the responsibilities of a pet owner. Alternatively, maybe the dog is lost, and some owner is frantically looking for him.
#2) If number one is not an option, buy some pepper spray. I don't know where you live, but here in Florida my drugstore carries it. I used to be routinely harassed by a neighbor's aggressive German Sheppard while riding my bike. Multiple calls to the dog's owner and to animal control had no effect. One day when Erik tried his customary attempt to take a chunk out of my leg, I let him have a blast. I have never seen a hundred-pound dog do a back flip five feet in the air before, and hope never to see it again. It may sound cruel, but the alternative could have been a very nasty accident, and that dog left me alone from then on.

3. Does he seem friendly? |
|
If he is friendly you ought to help the guy out, I always do when I come across strays. You could go down to the animal shelter, sometimes when people lose animals they post pictures at the shelter. Have you been checking the local paper for lost dog ads? I hope his owners can be found!

5. Who handles animal control in your area? |
|
It may be worth a shot calling today to report the dog. Since he's only been around for a couple of days he may have been left in a fenced yard for the weekend while the owners went away, and dogs being dogs he felt abandoned and found a way out. A dog can go from well groomed to Cujo in about an hour if he finds the right smelly stuff to wallow in. Leaving a dog alone for a few days is a dumb thing to do but some owners are that irresponsible.
Do you have any neighbors with dogs? Maybe someone could put out some food and a bowl of water.

7. The poor dog. If he's been loose for two days he needs help. |
|
Please try and help it, it's probably thirsty and hungry. Please call someone.
